I had my cranking battery go out on me this past weekend. It takes a 27 series and had a 27 series cranking battery in it for the last five years so it did good. I went to the store and they no longer carry a 27 series cranking battery. emoScratch They carry a 24 which is too small in power and a 29 which will not fit in the tray that is designed for a 27 in my boat.

The guy at the store said I could use a 27 series trolling motor battery and it would work just as well. emoScratch I thought a trolling motor battery was designed to have a long slow power down so it would last a longer time on the trolling motor. Does it matter? Would a 27 series trolling battery last as long as a 27 series cranking or would it go bad before it's time since it is supposedly not designed for that use?

Optimas are a bit smaller, and mine has lasted 4-5 years. Might look into them

i use a trolling motor battery for mine with no problems but i hear it doesn't have as much an affect on a small 70 hp like mine compared to a big motor say 175 +

Jmax, I wouldn't use a trolling motor battery for a cranking battery. There are other groups 27 starting batteries out there, but you might have to switch brands.

wormhook, Jmax will never spend the money for an Optima. I had some Optimas and they were the worst batteries i have ever used but mine were trolling batteries.

Jmax, for a cheapa$$ like you I would recommend Autozone Duralast or maybe Interstate. My starting battery is a Deka and its been fine but I am not a fan of deka's. If you win the lottery go get a Die Hard Platinum or Cabela's AGM.

Deka has a very good 27 series cranking battery. It's what I use, and I've always got 2 gps's, bsx, and every once in a while livewells, oxygenators etc. The smaller batteries just can't handle the extra's most people have now.

Put a Interstate Cranking 27 series in mine this spring...has the numbers that Merc requires for the new bigger Opti`s ...but the experts say it ain`t enough. Worked fine so far........103$

B Spin don't tell me that about the Optimax! I've got two on the trolling motor, so far they're great, but just over one year old. Good luck to Minner, the last 4 batteries I had were Interstate, worst I've ever had! Interstate did replace them twice, every other year! My father has had the big marine Delcos for ever! Had some of them 5 / 7 years! I guess there are good ones and bad ones in what ever brand.

Kinetik hands down, IMO. I competed in car audio events for 10 years and racked up 3 world championships, set 19 state records, and 3 world records using these batts. They are pricey but there are none out there that even compare. They do have a wide selection and the guys there are 110% dedicated to quality and customer service. Radio Clinic in Chatt carries them and should be able to price them. The standing voltage on mine were 14.8V and I ran 16,000 watts in my vehicle using 3 of their 2400 series batts. www.kinetikpower.com

My company supplied interstate batteries for my service van for replacements in industrial trucks( forklifts) and do not recall ever having any warranty issues with them no matter the age.

I've always thought that crank batts were made to put out the big volts to start your engine and then recharge while motoring around, that compared to a slow drain / long lasting power of the trolling batt. Which isn't supposed to put out the big volts over and over again when required to start the motor.

That's just what I understood from reading fishing mag articles, fishing shows and past posts here. emoScratch

Walmart batts.... a good price if they have 27's. (Do they sell the intersate brand?)

I was using 2 batteries for cranking because did alot of night fishing. This past summer I bought a duralast27dp 1000 cranking and 180 reserve minutes. I havent had no issues since. Battery was bigger than my tray too but I used extra strap to tie it down.

I did a lot of research a couple years ago regarding boat batteries. Pretty much all do as their ads imply. The optimas are in the upper range and do have certain atvantages especially in extreme hot weather. And as you may know they have a price tag for it also. The thing that I came up with in the conclusion was "warranty"..

I will tell you that I am a firm believer that the multi-purpose marine battery is by far abetter choice for my boat. I run three 29 seriesmulti-purpose batteries in my boat. Two for trolling and one for starting. If my starting battery should fail in a time of need, I have two back-ups ready with a simple switch of the wires. I do go offshore and a failed starting battery will not be a reason to have me lost at sea. Many trolling batteries will not turn a big engins fast enough to start. I know been there done that. Back on warranty. Your boat battery is bad and it's 4:30 AM on Sunday and you just have to go fishing. What you gonna do??? Where are you going to get a new battery for free in just a few minutes and still be on the water by daybreak? Well I will tell you that I have tried and proven that the MaxX multi-purpose batteries from good ole Wally World is by far my choice. They are half the price of the Optimas and do just as well in lasting all day. The best thing is that they have an unbelivable long warranty which includes three years free replacement at any Wal-Mart open 24/7. When is the last time you had a marine battery to last two years without problems?

I do not have stock in Wal-Mart but I have three marine batteries in my boat and two in my Chevy durimax truck. Never a problem and never ran down a multi-purpose battery trolling all day.
