The manual charger I use for my cranking battery had died. Has anyone heard of buying an onboard charger and changing the leads to alligator clips, then using as a manual charger?

For what it's worth, I bought a Cabela's 3 bank on-board charger for around $170 and love it. Didn't want to spend $250 or $300 on one, so went with the Cabela's and I have no regrets thus far

Never heard of it, but it's entirely possible. The question becomes- why would you want to do that? If you replace the connectors with alligator clips, you've likely voided the warranty. You'll also pay much more for an onboard charger compared to a "portable" one.

Hey Shank, I learned years ago to never question Drop shot (Patrick McBig Bass. It will only make your head hurt if he gives you an awn ser!emoLaugh It's the one thing that makes this place so great. Were all a bit different.

I have a two bank dual pro on-board for my trolling motor batteries...I have normally charged my cranking battery with a manual charger when needed, but the charger has quit.

I actually picked up a new charger this evening. Now I need a new cranking battery. I have read that some Mercs require a high number of CCAs? Any recommendations?

Patrick I have a single bank charger that I have quick disconects on so that I can change out what batterys I charge.

Or try a 1.5 amp trickle charger( maintainer) like a Battery Tender-brand name.
It comes with a pig tail that has terminals that stay attatched to your battery and you just plug it in when you park your boat.
It won't bring a low battery up, but will maintain a charge on your cranking battery without overcharging. Plugs in with a male/female connection without clips or undoing your terminals.
Wal-Mart for about $20 don't buy the Schumacher brand!

depends on engine but the Opti Pro xs reqire big numbers.

Bass Boart Central has a Opti Forum and lists the factory recommended and tested batts. Get your wallet out !
