Went to the destin charter service that we have used for years without problem. The boat we usually use is booked up so we trust the charter service for another boat. bad move...we are put on the REEL DOC. we show up at the dock last tuesday, June 27, at 6 AM, settle up the finaces and we are ready to go.

Problem number one, no captain. the deck hands are there everything seems ready to go but no skipper. After 45 mins the woman at the charter desk comes out and asks about the captain. finally an 1.5 hours later captain shows and does nto say a word to us. no sorry, no apology nothing. we load up and take off. we catch our bait and then to the fishing grounds. we rode about a mile and we all notice that we are putting out lines to mackeral fish, not a problem but we wanted to snapper fish! so we catch 2 tiny mackeral and then mr shark comes by. we fight him for about 20 minutes then bigger bull comes by. deck hand tells us to bust off first shark the catch bigger shark. 9/0 rod was already rigged. during the fight with the first shark we told them we were not interested in shark fishing we want snapper. falls on deaf hears. finally the bigger shark hooks up on one of our mackeral we caught. 2 hours later we catch the beast, 8 footer, who knows what it weighed. OK now can we go snapper fish? Here is problem number 2 Every thing is dead, no electronics at all. generator is smaking and dead. Capt tells us we have to head in.

Back at the dock we are told we will be refunded half our money so that we are charged for a 4 hour charter. But hey we are going to be in the paper! we argued the point that we never fished for anything we wanted and we did not want a shark trip but charter service told us it was the captains word over ours.

Total horse hockey.

we all noticed that noone at the docks seemed to care for the captain or his crew so they must be pretty much A holes.

I recommend that noone ever use the destin charter service. And if you see the Reel Doc on the water hang um a bird for me.

Our total.

1 big ass shark (AKA great advertisment for REEL DOC)
1 tiny king (aka shark bait)

out 500 bucks and total dissapointment.

I would be writing a crap load of letters to the charter service, to the local papers, etc. I would be making business for them as tough as I could be, especially if they pulled that crap on me.

we argued over the trip for an hour with the charter service then tried to contact the parent company only to be redirected to the charter service again. argued it over the phone for 2 days. then got hung up on by the lady that runs the charter service. called the BBB. and now we are rating them on any sight we can find on the net. i am getting the word out on every board i can think of!

As I said above, write up an article to send to the papers that are around that area. I am sure that they would just LOVE the exposure that they would get. ;)

And just so you know, I posted the information in your original post on another forum that I am a member of. I have a friend on there that lives in Florida, and he might be able to help get a list of newspapers from the Destin area.

;)

Thanks for the advice. Sorry for the bad trip.

Another charter you DO NOT want to go on is "Captain Judy Charters" in Savannah, GA. I took a group of friends down there for trolling/bottom fishing (8 hour) end of June 2003, and everything seemed to be going right until the captain says "ok, these rod/reels are $2000 a piece so I will hook the fish and let you reel them in". We were like WTF!! So we proceded to do what he wished. no big deal. We started trolling on the way out catching Kings, letting him set the hook for us, then while we were reeling in, captain puts the throttle to the floor causing us to basically pull the fish in skipping across the water. Did not get to feel one fish fight (caught 3 small kings and a cuda). We finally get out to bottom fish, and the captain couldn't find any fish. We moved to I don't know how many spots before it was quiting time. On the way back we decided to finish off the cooler of beer and try to make the most of the trip. BTW, Judy was on the cover of Georgia Outdoor News (GON) this past month. Man, I almost puked.

I have fished Olin Marlor (spelling) charters out of desting for about 10 or 11 years. there have been a couple of slow trips, but thats fishing, usually we do real well. I recommend them, capn't frank teams best of all. i forget how many boats they have, but if you are back in destin, look these guys up.

In panama city take any of the kelley boats out of Capt. Andersons marina. Never have had a bad trip with them, but book ahead they stay booked. They have several boats biggest being 50+ft with capabilities of 16 passengers.

i have been out with olin marler charters twice they are the worst in destin and trust me carry a very bad rep too. The only charter service i have not been out with is East pass.
