I have always used 65lb braid, but I was told I would get better results with mono or flouro. What is your take on this?

I have always used 65lb braid, no issues. I would not use mono, but have heard of people using 20-25 lb flouro.

20 to 25lb Floro is a better solution for a couple of reasons. Floro sinks and braid floats, allowing you to get it deeper. Hasn't happened to me more than a few times but another disadvantage to braid is the tendency to break if you get a backlash because it doesn't have a real high snap strength.

What heads is best for using on the rig? I used a lighter wire hook last year to help with breaking away when getting hung, however cost me several fish that would pull off.

.

I use 3/16 to 1/4 yum money heads. I tried 1/8 but the light wire hooks were garbage.

Thanks, that is what I had used and it was discouraging to say the least...you drag that deal around for couple hours to finally get bit by a good one, and watch it swim off at the boat lol

i have used 25lb mono in the past with no issues. i currently have one on braid and one on 25lb flouro. unless i think there is a HIGH probability of getting hung i throw the flouro.

there is definitely a fine line with the hooks, bending to get unhung vs loosing fish. i think you just have to be constantly aware that when you choose a light wire hook not to rush the fish to the boat and then try to bully it.......youre gonna have a bad time :) these are the best heads ive found for the rig:http://truesouthlures.com/headlock-jig-heads

I've had good luck with 1/8 oz strike king squadron heads. They have heavy hooks. I use 30 lb braid. It throws much better than 65 lb. braid is aggrivating below freezing. When i get hung up, i use a H2O lure retreiver. I don't jerk and pull with the rod because it seems to pull the braid down into the braid on the spool and causes backlashes. It slides down over the wires and gets the rig loose 90% of the time.

Just Order me a Lure Retriever...never owned one...I will get some of those heads from True South ordered..look to be very versatile

20# fluorocarbon is my favorite because my casting distance is insane. I can easily cast 30 yards with minimal effort and 40 yards if I'm getting aggressive with my casting. 20# is plenty strong to bend a hook to break it free if it gets stuck also.

I also use Strike King Squadron swimbait heads 1/8 oz.. had many of straightened hooks and lost fish before I switched! No problem whatsoever with these.

Amen. Also guys you're usually throwing the rig on a 7'11" rod or longer. Let the rod do its job and wear the fish down just keep em tight.
