I used to watch a guy at the dam use a big spinning reel and a heavy duty spinning rod throwing from the pier and he could make a cast almost the entire way to the wing wall. Probably a 100 yards. I believe it was the size 40 quantum optix reel from academy sports.
on the gulf piers we use 8 or 9 ft spinning rods with Pac Bay guides stainless guides that are way over sized. Guides sizes are 60, 40, 30, 25, 16 with 12 tip. Surf casters use up to 15 rods.
