Fished the BFL Super Tournament on Guntersville yesterday. I'd prefished with good results the past week and I was pumped. All of my areas were from midlake to the Southern end. Unfortunately, the partner I drew had plans to stay in Mud Creek all day long fishing a rat. We'd fished a rat for hours Thursday with no activity whatsoever so I wasn't happy with his choice. He told me that if his spots weren't paying off we'd run to some of mine. Well, the area of Mud Creek he chose had a thinnner mat than what we'd fished in front of Mink Creek. It was WAAAAAY in the back. My partner began to put on a fishing clinic on how to fish mats. He was culling by 9:30. I was getting bites, but was not hooking up. And yes, I waited until I felt the weight of the fish before I set the hook. The problem was, The rod I was using, a Medium heavy Falcon, was not stiff enough. His rod was an extra heavy model. He was able to ram the hook home when I couldn't. For those who've not fished grass on G, oftentimes there's grass in the fish's mouth too when setting the hook and you have to generate alot of force to drive the hook home through that grass. The action was exciting but frustrating for me. I had 25 blowups easily. Most of his fish were caught in the very outside of the lip and even he was saying they were not hitting it aggressively. He lost more fish than he caught too. He had 15lbs in the boat when we left around 2:00. We stopped just North of Comer Bridge where I managed a 2 1/2 lber on a blade. All in all it was an extremely disappointing day. I knew my areas held fish too but I can't blame my partner on his choice. He was on his own fish and that's the way it is. I did learn alot about rat fishing however and I'll be better prepared for next week when I'm fishing G again Saturday and Sunday. My partner ended the day in 10th place and is fishing the second day today. It must have been a tough day for most everyone. No one in my club made the Top 32 to fish the second day. Heck, it only took 5'3" to move on on the Co Angler side. This experience only makes it more obvious to fish on the Boater's side. I hope my partner slays them today. He was a good guy.
