Fished the 3rd stop on the BFL Choo-Choo Division tournament trail at Weiss Lake. 2 terrible finishes at Guntersville and Wheeler has put me behind the 8 ball. I need Weiss badly. By 1:00, I have 2 keepers via c-rigs and deciding that my season is over with. Suggested to my boater that I know an area that's always produced for me in the past. He's got nothing else going so he agrees. After a kidney bruising 10 minute run on 3-4 foot rollers, we arrive at the site. I catch a 3# on my first cast. Looks like Weiss is going to save me again. My boater catches a 2# a couple of minutes later. "Good call Partner" he says. We've both got 3 in the boat. Because there's lots of structure, I lose c-rig after c-rig. I'm spending more time to retie than I am fishing. Hmmm... shallow water, 20 mph winds, and good stain. Looks perfect for a firetiger Yo Zuri lipless crankbait. I'm culling in 20 minutes and my boater is looking for a firetiger Trap. He boats his last 2 keepers on it. On the way back to the weigh in , we stop on a point just underneath the bridge. On my first cast I get slammed. I tell my boater that if this thing is a bass, I just won the tournament. Unfortunately, it was a big catfish which bit the heck out of my thumb, drawing blood, as I'm putting it in the water. I end up with 10 lbs, 12 ozs, and tied with 2 others for for third heaviest weight on the co-anglers side. Cashed a decent check but more importantly, received much needed points. I also had the pleasure of having dinner with Tarheel Friday night who was fishing his first BFL. He finished just out of the money beating alot of experienced fishermen.. Great job Tony. That's impressive for your first BFL.
