Just wondering if the "big" catfish are male or female?

If know how big do males get, and how big for females(catfish folks, not wives!

).

I am sure some of you experts can set me straight.

I'm not an expert on catfishing, but I do know that the males run the females off the bed after spawning and the guys that are grabbling are catching some pretty big fish. emoBigsmile emoGeezer

Whoo hoooo .. DK is typing on a computer . .that has to be a good sign.

Wondering .. does the refuge release area on a catfish have the same coding ability as it did on BASS? Round ... vs not round???

:)

Ha .. wonder how many remember THAT thread!!!

BassBullet??? Care to chime in?

The males have a thingy!

I couldn't help myself!

BS

They sure do Beetlespin ..

they have a thingy against cleaning

a thingy against cooking

a thingy against dusting

washing dishes

and cleaning bathrooms.

:) All they want to do is fish!

I envy men.

I remember that thread that you are talking about, TT. It caused quite a lot of interest. Bass have thangys too. emoBigsmile emoGeezer

Typing on the computer is all you're gonna get from me for 3 weeks. 3 weeks of theory and not actual reports. You remember my definition of a theory??? A theory is a supposition based on ignorance of the subject matter. emoUpsmile

....From my commercial catfishing days.....

Telling the gender of a catfish is very difficult. If you are REAL good you can tell visually with about 60% accuracy. Heck flipping a coin is 50%, right? The only other noninvasive procedure is using an ultra sound to detect the male and female internal parts, which is about 80-90% accurate.

So if someone tells you they can "tell by looking at'em" they are either feeding you a line of bullcorn or they have an portable ultrasound in their boat. (I'd like to see them explain THAT to the game warden)emoBigsmile

Yup! I was worried this thread was going to degenerate into madness

From what info I have read (so far), there isn't a distinct difference in size in adult blue cats like there is in some other fish. However, there sure doesn't seem to be an awful lot of information out there about the blues. I don't know if they are difficult to study, or no one has done it, or if I just can't find the info, but I'd sure like to know lots more about 'em!

I dont know if its true or not, but here is the story I heard today. I dont know if any of you know Alan Kimsey out of the Hales Bar area, but he catches a lot of good cats around Nick dam, below and above. Does some guiding as well for trophy cats.

He also is a big bowfisher with quite a few record fish.

He tells of a real Smart-un that he knows that caught a 130lb blue just recently.....yes you read that right, and took it home and ate the thing!!!

Claims this guy wouldn't have cared that it was a world record, he still would have ate it!

I have my doubts, but who knows????

Could be true, but the world record is 124 or so and the state record is 112 if I remember correctly. I'm sorry, but I need unaltered pictures of fish and scales for those stories. I once weighed a 70 lb cat for another fisherman on my certified scales, and a couple of months later he was telling people that it was over 100, and I'm pretty sure he believed it by then. Another was a guy telling me he had caught the new state record flathead (he didn't mention weighing it) and had it on the dock and when he went away for a few minutes his grandson pushed the fish back into the water. Again, if my recollection is correct, the state flathead record is in the mid 80's, and I'm 6-1 and 230 lbs and couldn't hardly lift that 84 lb blue this spring, so I'd like to see his grandson! (or maybe I wouldn't!) Anyway, it's still good to hear the tales!emoToast

I guess that's why all Bass Pro Shops have a sign at their entrance that reads; "Welcome FIshermen And Other Liars"

If.... NO WHEN I catch my first monster cat how do I go about getting an accurate wieght on it? My scale only gos to 50#, so what do I do on the water with a fish I want to turn back? I surely cant call EricM to come wiegh the dang thing at the drop of a hat with his scales.

Most spring scales are accurate enough to do what you want. I also have a Berkley 65# digital that will weigh up to about 80 lbs reasonably well, so check your 50 and see how high it goes. The only time you need a certified scale is when you are applying for a record. I had no idea where to take a fish to be weighed, so that's why I bought the high dollar ones and have them certified every year with the IGFA. It's nice to not have to kill a fish just for a record, however mine only (only??) go to 100 so a bigger fish will give me a problem too. Anyone have any thoughts about what to do in that case (just in case!)?

I looked this afternoon at SP warehouse, they have a Rapala, with a WICKED looking grip on the end, and it goes to 125 lbs. (spring) I wonder how accurate they are?

The dang thing runs 95.99 also, so I cant bring myself to get it YET! Mine is a digital Rapala now.
