Well I got word that my boat will be fixed and ready to go sometime the beginning of next week (fingers crossed) so to celebrate I'm thinking of fighting the crowds that I'm sure are down there and go to Guntersville for a weekend, maybe the weekend after July 4th. Maybe. Anyway, I've been reading posts of people knocking the fish in the head with big worms, 10" +. How do you use these big worms? Just like normal smaller ones and bounce along the bottom? Seems that that wouldn't be right given all the grass. I figure the worm would burrow right down in the stuff and the fish would never see them. Is there a certain color that works better too? I've seen some that said red shad but many don't give a color. Since I have only been down to Guntersville once and that was the only time I have ever fished grass too, I'm a little confused on the tactics that catch the fish there other than a horny toad or the like in the morning. I'd love to get on a few fish but that lake really intimidates me given that eveywhere looks like there should be fish. Thanks for any help.

The worms are usually fished on the outside weedline along humps and ledges. If the bite is aggressive, try swimming them in the same place or just above the grass like a trap. My favorite is RI's Big Unit in Hematoma.

June-bug in color, fish on top of grass, along edges or find holes in the grass , better have some good line, hard to pull them bigens out.emoThumbsup

June Bug and Red Bug have both produced for me down there in the past. You may also want to try a fluke in the grass worked slowly 12 inches behind a silver swivel.

Any color big worm is good as long as it's red bug. Ask around when you get down there. That color will be the favorite. I've had more luck on the Yum brand. It'll be hard to find down there this time of year. I always stock up when I'm down there during the Winter. If you can't find the Yum brand, look for the 10 inch size made by Gambler. If all else fails, look for the Zoom Ole Monsters in red bug. As for the technique, there are two that I've learned. Use a lighter weight. Either a 1/8th or a 3/16th. Cast it out over the sumerged grass and let it fall. The lighter weight will not bury up as bad. Slowly raise you rod tip to 12 o' cock and let the worm pendelum towards you in a swimming type action. Take up the slack and repeat all the way back to the boat. The second way is to cast it out and before it hits the grass, begin to reel very slowly with you rod to the side about waist high so that the worm swims just above the grass. I learned both of these techniques from two of the best guides on Guntersville. Both of them fish nothing but the Yum worm. Good luck.

J-Dub, I'd go with Pointer's advice...those G'ville guides know what their talking about! Never tried redbug...
