Whats going on with all the posts on blown engines lately? One after another after another. My 175 has not run well the last couple of trips & is turning about 1000 rpms less than last summer in the humid weather and may very well be blown also. The only thing different I can think of is I started burning BP gas in it but noticed (CONTAINS ETHONOL) stickers on the pumps awhile back. Do any of you remember any such changes you made awhile before your engines went? Maybe there is a common factor for so many at one time that could save some of the other members from the same fate.emoBawl

I think I remember reading on another forum where the discussion about ethanol came up....from what I gathered it seems like ethanol in gasoline is nothing new. They are now only disclosing the fact to us now..

i had just filled my merc with 10 percent eth the day befor it blew but the same day i had a pro tell me he did not have to change his pluges as often when he used eth and it semed to prefrom better but i dont know

I too am in the blown motor club, but mine was a mechanical error, not ethanol.

make sure to put a water separating fuel filter on your fuel supply line, because ethanol will absorb water. Water and two stroke engines don't mix very well

Like my hero JTF said, ethanol doesn't cause your motor to blow up. It does contain water though. It is physically impossible to get 100% pure ethanol. 95% purity is at good as it gets. Given that, a 10% ethanol containing gas has 0.5% water content in it when you pump it. The fuel companies put additives in the fuel to keep the water from separating. Over time it will separate though. I run Seafoam in every tank now because of this. Whatever pro said ethanol makes his boat run better is an idiot too. Ethanol produces less energy per gallon than gasoline does. If an engine gets 15mpg on gasoline it will only get 11mpg with E85.

Ethanol for fuel is nothing more than a book of tales. Its government subsidized and a poor fuel choice. It takes more energy to make it than it gives. These idiot car companies need to learn to use aluminum in heavy car parts rather than steel and engines can be way more efficient than they currently are.

Sorry for the rant but this one gets me riled up.

BS

like beetlespin said +1, also look to see in the next year many more engine problems because like my '05 250xs it requires premium, well most drivers of the tankers that fill the tanks at the gas stations say there is only 1 grade of fuel in their truck and they are putting it in all of the underground tanks so at best we are only getting the mid grade which now contains "corn oil" and this has caused all of our fuel mileage to decrease which makes us buy more gallons for each vehicle each year so instead of using less "natural" resources guess what, we actually use more and we also pay more for the "watered down" version so they just keep on making billions of $'s and we suffer the consequences of it all!!

my rant! next one will be on how home valuse have really decreased by about 30% but the county and city commisioners aren't about to decrease any of our property taxes---later!!

we are just pawns in their game and at THEIR mercy!!

Great suggestion. I've been very pleased with mine. Had a little mishap that caused me to get some water in the gas tank. My water separator really saved me.

I'd be interested to hear how many of the blown motor owners routinely run wide open throtle. I was just wondering if a defect that might be there wouldn't be exposed until it was subjected to repeated maxiumum stress.
