I couldn't sleep, so I started looking at my fishing journal for the past couple of years. The "slump" we have been experiencing this fall is absolutely normal! Just like this year, the previous two years show that the big blues (34"+) disappeared pretty much from late August until late October, and the smaller fish were few and far between too. I could have saved myself (and you) a lot of heartache and headache if I'd looked at my journal earlier. It IS why I keep the darn thing in the first place! At least I don't have to keep wondering if I'd lost the "touch".emoDoh

Eric, is it possible that the bigger blues or all blues for that matter are transitioning to the lower ends of the lake or deeper pools of water? I have noticed from past years, that the bigger fish just seem to show up around the dam area in the fall. I don't fish enough for catfish to get a good handle on this. I just seem to catch much bigger fish in the fall down on the lower end and during summer catch good numbers of smaller fish with only an occasional big fish. emoScratch emoGeezer

Ditto what Alan said, I sure would hate to think that EricM lost his touch on the big cats.emoBigsmile
If I am hearing you right then it means that the bigguns are about to start eating any day. GoodemoThumbsup

My theory is they are suspending or going shallow following the bait balls. The 30 lber I got yesterday came from 15 feet of water on a drop. It ate a 1.5" spoon. Maybe downsizing the bait to match the hatch would get more fish right now.

I didnt know that a skip-jack steak looked like any hatch out there...

Michael, you are probably right, but you know what the definition of a "theory" is?...emoBigsmile emoGeezer

There have been many times in October when I have been below the Nick smallmouth fishing with shiners and we could not fish for smallmouth because we could not keep the cats off of em...and these cats would be 2 pulls off the bank way up tight!

I remember last year around this time they did the same thing. early november was when the big boys started showing up around the nuke!!
