We had 15 boats and really pretty good conditions for our second TX of the year. My partner Dave and I started around the dam throwing cranks and rigs waiting on the generators that came on at 7:00 (supposed to) to create some current thru the canal... apparently they didn`t come on and we headed up the Tennesee to the Concord area to start. After trying several things Dave caught a couple on some nothing banks in about 3 ft of water on a homemade Crank made by I don`t know who. One was a keeper and after another small one I dug out a shallow Flatmax Bandit in the near same color pattern of white with pale Grey shading on the top.. We attempted to go back in Turkey Creek but there just wasn`t room with the crappie fisherman and all. We moved back down river looking for the cow patty pattern....flatter type terrain( ground that was too low for mansions but just right for pasture) with matching water similar to our first catches (cows seemed to be key ). Dave caught a second keeper and I caught one 1/8 short if you squeeze the tail. The fish seemed to be in the first 1-200 yards of pockets off the main channel... We moved on to another similar spot and I caught another 1/8 short which would measure 14" if you sweep the tail....Both fish were really fat...I`m getting desparate. As time is starting wind down an several more shorts between us Dave catches his 3rd Keeper (we just weigh 3 fish each for club points)....He graciously asks me if I want his plug...I said" No I`ll just lose it"....so another 10 minutes and Dave gets his 4rth keeper......I said "give me that dam plug"....we ran our plugs side by side while trolling along to check out the action and to our surprise they looked identical......lay `em in your hand and they identical in size and shape ...my Bandit had a little black on the spine....the difference was the Bandit had rattles...........we`ve got about 15 minutes left before we have to haul butt.....Dave puts a different color of the same plug on while I`m flailing the water with his plug ....and catches another just short on the first cast.....Just wasn`t my day......and it ain`t done yet....

We cut it close on time so we`re hauling water getting to the weigh `in about 18 miles away......as we come thru the canal about 70 MPH....checkin` time... lookin good about 3-4 miles from the ramp at Poplar Springs and.........
it was like somebody turned the switch off in the boat. I look at the gas guage (1/4 Tank ) and feather the hot foot trying to get it to catch and go.......Dave looks over at me in his helmet like "What are you doing"......Since I had my FishHedz on he didn`t hear me say "Your fixin` to get you A** wet"....about the time he realized it was coming the backwash hit all the way to the steering wheel.

Of course you know what`s going thru my head....BLOWN UP !! 10 year old Johnson 225 and been stupid enough to brag on how it was holdin` up lately.... Tried to crank it up and it would bark but sounded funny and weak....I told Dave to call an try to get a hold of somebody in the club to come get the fish any way while I got on the trolling motor for the slow miserable ride to the ramp.... He only had one guys number and I couldn`t find my phone which had several guys numbers....after his second try Lee answered his phone and was about 3-4 minutes behind us headed our way...He stopped and picked Dave and the fish and headed on I while went to the canal ramp.....
Dave weighs in and the comes and gets me and we go back over to weigh which is done by the time we arrive. 14 + to win ...I think second was 11+ I believe Carl Guffey had 8+ and Dave had 6.80 in his 4... I`m not real sure where every body finished for sure since they were done by the time I got my wet butt there...but I think Dave fish were 4-5-6-? ... Found out the new TX director would accept the Sweep of the Tail emoBang emoBang probably would have been second or third with the 2 I threw back....

Just wasn`t my day !!!

Snuffy, what a shame...hate to hear that your motor ain't working ...sounds like you all enjoyed the day...NOT FA

RE: BLUE RIDGE BASSMASTERS #2 ON LOUDON -TELLICO

thanks FA actually it was pretty good till it shut down....

I pulled the plugs when I got home and tried to see some damage and couldn`t but its hard to see anything but the tops of the pistons.. A neighbor works for Travis Marine and I had him bring his Compression Guage after work monday. All the cylinders checked out good and we hooked up his Spark checker and find that one side of the engine isn`t firing at all...Ok that`s good news powerpack or trigger....500$ instead of 5000$ emoParty

while looking around the engine I find a couple of pieces what looks to be reeds and a couple of small bolts..laying the bottom of the cowl... during the winter I put my fingers on every bolt head on the engine just lookin` for something loose.....Mark Bunch has been doing my engine maintanance since I bought this engine from then 10 years and we`re always kidding around all the time and I thought may be he had put them in there to get me excited.....

well I loaded up this morning and took it down to Bunch `s and showed the stuff to Mark and asked if he thought that was funny... He gave me look and I knew I was in trouble...

On the top of the engine under the fly wheel is the carrier for the top Bearing ...and of course some of the timing and stator and stuff electrical....apparently the 2 bolts were from the carrier and somehow the 4-5 other bolts sheared off in the block and the carrier spun about an 1/8 of a turn....which is where the sheetmetal came from... the stator area under the flywhweel.....
Mark said he had only seen 1-2 of this kind of problems and they were in late 90`s and early 2000`s...said there was about a 99% chance that it would require a new block... so we`re back to a new block which would be $5000 plus....more than the engine is book valued....

since I haven`t worked since about October...fixin it right now is out of the question....

Well I did get some good news in the midst of all this ....I got a call Monday and I`m going to Bull Run Steam Plant next Monday and go to work......
OOPs I spoke too soon....Just got a call while I was typing this and it`s going to be the next Monday (26th) before we can go to work.....

Ay yay ya ya ya :(

Whew, Snuffy! What in the world have you been doing to that motor? It sounds abused. Sorry that it croaked on you. congratulations on the new job. How many friends do you have up there that will take you fishing?

RE: BLUE RIDGE BASSMASTERS #2 ON LOUDON -TELLICO

Dang Snuffy , that just stinks ! Can they not back the sheared off bolts out by drilling and tapping the old bolts ?

RE: BLUE RIDGE BASSMASTERS #2 ON LOUDON -TELLICO

dang DK I`ve been gentle on the girl all along....rarely run it wide slam open...if I did it wasn`t for more than 15-20 seconds...it wasn`t never gonna be the fastest boat out there and I really didn`t care about that anyway...Ive got a couple of buddies but both of `em sold their boats last fall and are planning on brand new one `s ......sometime...... I guess this might be a little spur in their side.....

I built a couple of v-4`s a few years back and best I remember you have to crack the cases to do the proper fit up on the seals and that bearing housing and stuff...best I remember they`ve got them spaghetti seals and and are a real pain to get everything to come together torquing and the bearing cages and all...not something you can do without doing it right..
I`ll probably pull it apart if the insurance won`t do anything and just see what i can do....Mark said when the bolt shear they nearly always ruin the hole beyond repair...

Oh yeah I forgot the Big Fish story.....like I said the cowpatty pattern required nothing on `em banks so when the crankbait stopped altogether I figured I had got into one of the crappie brushpiles....then it moved ...with some real weight....I could fell him wigglin` pretty good and figure he was trying to bury in to the pile ...so I give a real good pull to try to get him out of the pile....and saw his mouth coming at me but couldn`t get him free....had to be at least 8 pounds by the size of his mouth....the water had some pretty good color to it ...so when his mouth disappeared back in the pile ... I figured I was gonna lose him........then he made a run and just about pulled me in the lake....I was starting to smell a rat about then and sure enough he finally rolled to the top and dang if I didn`t have a 20# carp hooked in the tail...took 10 minutes and chasing him with the trolling motor to get my plug back....emoBang

RE: BLUE RIDGE BASSMASTERS #2 ON LOUDON -TELLICO

Sorry to hear about your motta, Snuff. Unfortunately, the end eventually comes for all of them.....Hopefully, Mark can get you going without a great deal of pain. Glad to hear you will be getting back to the Bull later in the month. From what I heard from Sam, about all the keepers that were weighed Saturday came from the Loudon side up around Concord. Sounds like you and Dave were in the right place, but just ran out of time. The Tellico guys bombed. I'm sort of boatless right now or I'd haul your butt around a little. I've sort of got Mark and the boys working on a little project for me right now too!! It's sort of your color scheme...Later!!

RE: BLUE RIDGE BASSMASTERS #2 ON LOUDON -TELLICO

OOHH.... HAVE WE A NEW TRITON ON THE WAY !!!! ???
GOOD DEAL...I HOPE YOU GET IT SOON.... THEY ARE BUSY AS BEES DOWN THERE RIGHT NOW.....

THERE`S ABOUT ZERO CHANCE OF FIXIN MINE ....PROBABLY GONNA HAVE TO HAVE A NEW BLOCK OR AT MINIMUM A TEAR DOWN ...WHICH ABOUT THE SAME AS A SHORT BLOCK THAT IS $5000+...AND IT WON`T BE WORTH THAT WHEN IT`S DONE...
I`M DEBATING ONE OF THE 225 PRO XS WITH THE 5 YEAR WARRANTY BUT DON`T THINK I`M GONNA BE ABLE TO PULL IT OFF BEFORE THE WARRATY DEAL RUNS OUT AT THE END OF THE MONTH..

HOLLER WHEN YOU BACK ON THE WATER AND WE`LL GO.
