I took the Kayaks over to a private lake I have access to on Saturday. Last spring and summer I had some unreal days over there with many fish over 7lbs but the last couple of trips were tough. One trip I didn't catch a single LM so I started crappie fishing and the other I only managed a couple of short fish.
So I packed the crappie gear ready just in case.
We didn't start until around 1:00 when it warmed up. After short paddle to the old channel bed I made my first cast with an Academy H2O brand square bill I had bought Friday night on sale for $2 bucks. I started just slowly cranking and immediately hooked up with a 3lb fish. I then caught a fish on 4 of the first 5 casts. All in the 3 lb range. Moved around a little and picked up several more in the 3-4lb range. It seemed like I was on an episode of Major League fishing... A fish on almost ever cast.
After about an hour or so I had caught about 20 plus nice LM... I had one that would have been in the 8lb range but of course as I was trying to dig my phone out I lost my grip and it fell back into the water... I posted a couple of fish.... the pics make them look much smaller.
Anyway... just for kicks I decided to see if it was the crank bait I was using or would they hit about anything. I tied on 4 different cranks, two different spinner baits, a swim bait, shakey head, jerk bait and a head spin. Couldn't get bit... I tied the original crank back on and caught another 4 lb fish on the first cast.
Go figure... It was a red craw fish pattern and I was cranking it as slow as possible without falling sleep.
Now my partner was having a good day with a blue skirted spinner bait. I tried it and couldn't get anything. He seemed to be letting it almost drag on the bottom. He also had probably 15 or so fish with one around 7lbs or so. I forgot my scales. He had a ruler and it measured 24"
Fun day for sure... Didn't use the crappie rod...
I have a fish finder on the Kayak and it said the water depth where we were catching most of the fish was in the 7 foot range. Water temps were 48-49 degrees.
