I HAVE A 2000 JAVELIN WITH A 175 JOHNSON IT WILL GO IN REVERSE FINE BUT HAS A HARD TIME GOING IN FORWARDS UNLESS THE PROP IS OUT OF THE WATER OR THE BOAT IS ALREADY MOVING A LITTLE TO WHERE THE WATER IS FORCING THE PROP TO TURN. CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH THIS .

Either has gotten way out of adjustment or the clutch dog lugs and gear lugs are worn. There is also a thrust washer that is on the reverse gear that breaks and causes addition slack. Do you shift it hard or easy????

U may have a bad shift interupt switch. U should always shift it into gear quickly. If u hear grindin u r going to slow. U need to drain your gear oil and make sure its not full of water. I have seen cases were water in the case caused shift problems.

There is the problem. You have worn off the clutch dogs. The way a lower is designed you need to shift HARD. They have lugs that have male and female slots on both the clutch dog and gear. When you shift hard the males "connect" then "Fall" into the females and engage the gears. By shifting EASY you allow the males to "RUB" and wear off the ends. That is what that "clicking" noise was when you shifted. That is not a good issue. From what info you have given the forward gear and clutchdog lugs are rounded and will not "engage" due to shape.

The shift interupt swithch is on to DISENGAUGE from gear. It causes the engine to misfire to allow some of the pressure off the lugs and makes it easier to disengauge, outdrives have used these forever. Outboards didn't start using them untill late 80's. Water would only cause a shift issue if was ice in lower.

On the v6 engines it also helps to engage the gears also. Your probably right because he's a slow shifter but on the big v6 engines the shift interupt switch works both ways.

The deal was to disengauge. The load these big horsepower engine with high pitch props it make it chore to take out of gear. Disconnect one. It will go into gear easy but very difficullt to come out.

Here are some pics. The gear is a new reverse gear for your engine. The clutch dog is a bad one for a merc V-6. You can see how sharp the edge is on the new gear and on the clutchdog you can see it is chipped and very rounded.
