Just a tip for the uninformed like myself. My boat wasn't peeing very strong at first then a few trips later it quit peeing all together. I told a friend at work about it and told him I could hear the water pump working and told him it ran the same just wasn't peeing. He told me to try running a small wire down the pee hole and it should clear up. Sure enough it did. Alot cheaper than buying a new impeller or water pump. Sometimes we pick up grass or other junk. My buddy says he has even had dirt daubbers to try and build nest in the tube. Hope this helps someone.

See that often, but you can also see if its working by putting it on the hose and looking around the prop as excess water is dumped into the exhaust and out around the prop or thru it.

Unlikely you can actually hear the water pump, it's a displacement-type pump, rubber impeller in a round housing, driven by the vertical driveshaft, nothing actually mechanical to hear. Mud daubers are a big culprit here, spiders too. It's a good idea to replace your impeller at least every other year. Most manufacturers recommend it as part of your annual service. Granted, I've gone for several years before with no problems, but why press your luck? Regular maintenance protects you from overheats and powerhead failures which cost way more than a water pump service.

Replaced mine myself this winter, and the hardest part was putting the foot back on right! Not costly at all when you compare to a new motor!!! Last month, did have a run in with a dirt dobber though lol...
