Do boat trailers need a trailer tag for transporting from state to state. I pull to Ala. and Ga at times, do those states require a tag for boat trailers.

As long as you are a TN resident, you dont have to have one. If you get pulled over, tell 'em your from TN. I had to do it once on a Florida trip. He thought I was some dumb redneck...he was right, but after a few calls he let me go.

Churly is exactly right. I have a big boat that I pull to FL so I wanted to know for sure. There is a form that you can acquire from the tags office that explains all the details. You can carry it with you when you cross state lines to show in the event you get pulled over by an officer that is not aware of TN's rule. All states honor the tag exemption for personal use trailer laws of Tennessee.

The same thing applies to utility trailers for personal use. For commercial use, a trailer must have a SEMI tag that is bought one time and good for as long as you have the trailer. There is a clause that exempts trailers under a certain dimention. The law allows you to have a personal use trailer that the "Cargo area" does not exceed 8'-0" wide or 20'-0" long. The cargo area excludes fenders, braces and tongue.

I can assure that in GA, AL, FL and all other states, they do honor TN law provided that you have TN tags on your vehicle and have TN drivers licence. I found out for sure.

Thanks churly, liveliner, and everyone else for the great information and reassurance. I had heard from different people, but they were always not really sure. I appreciate you guys taking the time to respond to my question.

Shocker, I got a ticket one time in GA at a boat ramp. Even tho I tried to tell the officer that it was legal he wrote it anyway. I came home and went to the court house to make positive. The county clerk copied the law for me and I was set to go to federal court in Gainsville GA. Two days before the court date the judges office called and said to tear the ticket up. Apparently, I had caused such a ruckus with the State attourny generals office that they had contacted the court. </p>

I now carry a copy of the law with me and it hasn't been challenged since. I was mad as a dog at first but with the outcome I was a happy camper in the end. The officer got a talking to and he called me at home and apologized to me. </p>

One of the main concerns that you now have to worry about is the laws of brakes on your trailer. </p>

If you have a heavy boat like I do, it is worth checking into.....</p>
