The drama continues with my motor. I took my motor to another shop to get a 'second opinion' on my motor not running right and they came back with the same diagnosis. I've lost two cylinders from my 1994 Evinrunde 150. They said that they think they can have it bored out and sleeved for around $2000 - $2500 and take a couple of weeks to get it done. I've never had this issue before so I just wanted to know if that was a fair price or not. A buddy in my fishing club told me he got his 70 h.p. motor rebuilt for $700 a couple of months ago. Does the h.p. matter when getting this done so that my 150 would be so much higher? Thanks guys.

Ask your buddys mechanic for an estimate. Sounds like a real good price. Just make sure he is reputable, maybe get a few references. 2000-2500 bucks is probably about the going price for the job.

IF THEY`RE GOING TO SLEEVE IT , I DON`T KNOW WHY YOU`D NEED TO BORE IT .....THE NEW SLEEVE SHOULD BE STOCK PISTON SIZE ...UNLESS THEY`RE JUST GOING TO FIT IT TO THE PISTON.....
ALSO I`M PRETTY SURE THEY`LL HAVE TO PULL THE BLOCK AND BREAK IT DOWN.....IF YOU HAVE TO DO ALL THAT I`D JUST LOOK FOR A SHORT BLOCK REBUILT
I DID SOME RESEARCH WHEN I THOUGHT MY 225 HAD BLOWN AND I COULD GET A COMPLETE NEW REBUILT SHORT BLOCK FOR ABOUT 3800 WITH A YEARS UNCONDITIONAL WARRANTY
I WOULD THINK YOU COULD DO BETTER WITH A COMPLETE SHORT BLOCK....

THE BAD THING IS NO MATTER HOW YOU DO IT....EVEN SLEEVE AND BORE... THE MOTOR WOULDN`T SELL FOR THAT MUCH EVEN AFTER THE FIX....
I`LL SEE IF I CAN FIND THE LINKS TO THE PLACES I FOUND THE SHORT BLOCK AND SEND THEM TO YOU TOMORROW AFTER WORK.....

The 70 HP rebuild sounds like a "hone and ring job". To bore and replace a couple of pistons (they are $125 ea. at best), hone and ring the other 4 is in the 2000-2500 range. This would probably include new rod bearings. If the mains need to be replaced, then it will be more. Another variable is whether the replacment parts are OEM's or "aftermarket". I would question this "sleeved" business. Evinrude engines are designed to have the pistons take the brunt of the abuse in order to minimize damage to the cylinders.

Last fall, I had my 95 model Evinrude 150 repaired with 2 new pistons .010 over, the others honed and ringed, and new rod bearings. My cost was in the $2000-$2500 range. All because of my impatience and the failure of my "low oil level" alarm. The sickening thing to me is that this whole episode was totally preventable.

Check your oil reservoir level often and make sure your engine is "smoking".

If, when you turn on your ignition key, you don't get a "beep". Your alarm system is BROKE!!

I going to take my engine in for service very soon. I plan to have the auto oil injection disconnected and plugged and mix my oil with the gas as I fill up. I have been so paranoid about the oil in my gas that I have been adding an additional 8oz. per gallon directly to my gas. My engine is 12 years old now and I need many more years of service to at least recoup some of the monstrous expense over the last couple of years. If you want to know how much it costs to replace the entire lower unit on an Evinrude 150, just ask me!!!

I would suggest you take it by Glen Gamble ( Outboard Doc 622-5450) Bonny Oaks Dr (old HWY 58 between South Chick Creek and Jack's bait & Tackle, for a diagnosis before you make your final decision. Call first since he is busy and has limited storage space.

I believe you called it just right MB.....
I sleep so much better since I unhooked my oil injection.....and I believe by using a sythetic oil (Amsoil) that I`m reducing the carbon build -up in ringgroove too. I couldn`t believe how clean the top cylinder crankcase area was when I was in there recently.

MB, I had to rebuild my '85 Johnson 140 twice before I got smart enough to have the oil tank disconnected and mix the gas myself! Now I don't push the limits anymore (in life OR fishing) and throttle back a little. The extra minute or two getting there isn't worth the $$$$$.

The first thing I did when I bought my 200 merc, was remove the oil injection tank and sensor. I only use klots synthetic in my motors. I have an 85 modle 90hp merc that had Klots run thru it most of it's life, and like snuffy said, it was clean on the inside and it has kept the compression from going any higher from carbon build up.

I agree with most of what MB said except this...

'' Evinrude engines are designed to have the pistons take the brunt of the abuse in order to minimize damage to the cylinders.''

I'd sleeve it so it'll be all back to standard size. It only cost $200 more to have a sleeve installed over boring. Sleeving the cylinder is the best option in my opinion.

I can rebuild this engine for $2000 + tax. I've rebuilt plenty of these engines and I can give you and engine you can count when finished. Of major concern with this engine is water leakage from a casting defect in some early to mid 90's Johnson/Evinrude 150/175 hp engines.
If there has been piston damage from water it will be easy to spot when you take the head off. If you have any more questions pm me or call me at work (706)891-9921 Chatt Marine ask for Joey.
On a engine rebuild right now it will take 3 weeks and I usually ask for half the money when the block is back from the machine shop and the parts are in. The balance when the job is finished.
One year parts & labor warranty.
Whether or not you get me or someone else to rebuild the motor you need to get the cause of the engine failure diagnosed or you will go thru the same process again.
