I finally decided to make my first trip to Bass Pro Shop in Sevierville Saturday and am proud to say I escaped with only $115 bill. I was wanting to look at the new reel design before I got one. I purchased the Extreme model for $49 instead of going for the Pro Qualifier for $100...just to see if it there was any advantage to it.

As far as the function of it, it seems fine, smooth, and the theory of bigger spool will reduce line twist is probably true. It comes with an extra spool and I put Suffix Elite 12# on one and the Fireline Crystal 20# on the other. For some reason ,no matter which way you turned the Suffix spool it twisted terribly, and the Crystal was fine ..I spooled a bunch of backing off another reel and had no twisting problem with it.

I went to Douglas Sunday morning and the first thing I did was unspool the Suffix and let it lay on top of the ice and water for a while and then reeled it up and a crankbait on and used it for an hour or so . The reel seemed work fine and really couldn`t detect any real line twist at all and it seems to cast good although I didn`t have it on a good rod for slinging cranks.

I switched to the spool of Crystal and put a jig on and as usual love the feel and had no problems with twist or memory even in the icy water... I would guess that in anything but clear water the line would be fine for most techniques. I believe Fireline and and even the flourocarbons almost need to be broken in with use. Especially the braid type superlines seem to work better after they been run over the eyes for a while....makes them more flexible....

I would like to be able tell you the reel and line handled whoppers with ease but since we didn`t get a bite I won`t lie.....We had a better chance of catching a Penguin than a fish on Sunday.....will update as I get to use them more but I think the reel will be better for reducing line twist at least.

Looking on line BPS has two pro qualifier models, only one is the wide spool which is listed on line at $69.

Also which size extreme did you end up with: the EX1000B which is 7.5 oz or the EX2000B at 10.4 oz. I am looking for a new reel to go on a custom rod and I am trying to look for something sub 9 oz but having a larger spool diameter.

IT MAY HAVE BEEN THE JOHNNY MORRIS WIDE FOR 99$....
I GOT THE 2000 EXTREME....IT HAS A REALLY SMALL BODY AND A BIG SPOOL....LOOKS KINDA FUNNY BUT SEEMS TO WORK GOOD...I WENT WITH THE LARGER ONE BECAUSE OF THE LINE SIZE IS MORE LIKE WHAT I`LL USE....10-12# AND IT DOES`NT HOLD A WHOLE LOT OF LINE.... 110 FOR 12# I BELIEVE...SO IT WON`T HURT TO CHANGE MONO MORE OFTEN.....I PUT ABOUT 65-75- YARDS OF OLD MONO BACKING UNDER THE FIRELINE....THE CRYSTAL 20# (8# DIA.) WAS 330 YRD SPOOL AND I BELIEVE ACCORDING TO HANDLE TURNS THAT I GOT APPROX. 110 YARDS OF CRYSTAL ON AND FILLED THE SPOOL OUT JUST ABOUT RIGHT...AT ALMOST 10CENTS A YARD I WANTED TO BE FRUGAL (CHEAP)WITH IT.

if the ice breaks and I can get a chance to get near a fish that ain`t a popsicle. i`l let you know how it all works....
