BRAIDED LINE

Help Support Chattanooga Fishing Forum:

I have not tested all braided line but I have tested white Power Pro and Berkley Fireline Yellow. Power Pro don't Glow, but here is the Fireline in 30lb yellow;

Thanks! Here is one more question? My spool gives the yardage of line it will hold for specific poundage. I've never used braided line, but I've been told that it is much smaller diameter than standard mono line. What size mono line should I compare the 30lb braided line with when figureing the amount of line that my reel will require?

G-man...My buddy just started using braided line. He uses P-line braided. On the box it say's 15lb test @ 4lb diameter....Maybe for 30lb test it would be 8lb... Hope this helpsemoScratch

THANKS! They may have the information on the Box of Berkley. I'll be sure and take a look at it when I go to Sportsmans Warehouse. I apperciate all the help. I did a search on the internet and didn't realy find anything that helped. The information that you guys have given has realy been helpful.

Oh yea, great picture Liveliner!

G-Man I have used braid since it came out. Don't know about the glow but the best way to spool it is to buy the 125 yd spool and wind it onto your reel. Then using a double Uni knot tie on some old mono or some cheap stuff. Finish spooling your reel to the proper amount. Then either spool it onto another reel or walk it off and tie the mono to the reel you will be using it on. Rewind it back on. This does two things. First it lets the mono grip the spool because braid will slip and secondly it saves a bunch of money from spooling the braid all the way. When times are tough I have even just put 50 or 60 yards of braid on this way.

Cheez,
I think I understand what you are saying, but let me run the end result by you to make sure I'm not missing something.

End result, I will have mono tied to the spool and 125 yds of braided line tied to the end of the mono which fills up the remainder of the spool. If I want to tie on a carolina rig, I would just tie the braided line onto a swivel and use a mono leader line.

And yet another question. I like to peg my weight slightly above two or three glass beads with a toothpick. Is this possible with the braided line?

Great point there Cheez. However I think you may have missed it G-man. Super braid has no shock relief like the stretch in mono therefore you back your line with mono or do what I do. I cover the base only of the spool and not the sides with two wraps on a soft tape like the clear duct tape. The tape cushions the line and also prevents it from slipping on the spool.

The way Cheez explained it was to allow you to be able to judge how much mono is needed to fill your reel and to use all your new Braid. A good point you brought up G...You do need some Fluorocarbon or good mono at the lure. If you use a barrel swivel, that can be your connecting point. Another thing that you must do is to learn which knots will work with braid and which of your favorite mono knots will fail. Check the instruction sheet that comes with your braid and learn those knots.

If you get Berkly Fireline, try the new Cyrstal. 30 lb test is a good size to go with.

I use Berkley and PowerPro. I like the way powerPro performs better than Berkley but Berkley is tuff stuff in rocks and abrasive areas.

That's pretty much right G-Man. The main reason I back my braid up is the price of the stuff. If your reel holds say 200 yds of 10# line and you are using a 10/50 braid then you would have to buy the 300 yd spool which costs on average over $20. By backing with mono which is necessary at least a few wraps you use the 125 yd spool of 10/50 and 75 yds of cheap or used 10# mono. I go the extra mile in frugality though. I put 140 to 150 yds of mono and 50 to 60 yds of braid. Then I can get 2 reels done from a 125 or 150 yd spool of braid.
