I just bought a Abu 6500 C3 camo special edition that I plan on running some 40lb Ugly Braid and a Ugly Stik for a catfish rig but Im wondering if the braid will eat the eyes out of my rod Ive never used a braided line and Im interested in it due to its strength compared to its diameter... is there a rod with eyes designed to hold up to braided line ? If so do you guys have a recomendation ? Or a recomendation on a strong nonbraided line ?

Hey, FA. Can you explain a bit more about aluminum oxide inserts. That seems to describe inserts you could buy to prep any rod to accept braid. Am I correct? If so, where would I pick up some. I have 50lb braid I am putting on 4 rods to chase cats soon. Dang work kept getting in the way this week. Thanks.

Naw, these are guides that you buy and build rods with....I don't know of any guide inserts that you can replace in already guides that are on a rod.....If you have wire guides or other guides that do not have these extremely hard guides the braid line will surely cut a groove sooner or later.....sorry to disappoint ya SCA....FA

Just FYI... I've used braid on every catfish rod I own for several years.... several plain old Ugly Sticks and others without any special guides. I have yet to experience any grooves cut in guides.

This could be a factor of how it's used... i.e. if you're doing a lot of "cranking & winding" over and over and over again, I can see how that might perhaps cause a "groove" issue.

However the way I catfish... vertical fishing mostly... hit the button, drop it to the bottom and "let 'er bounce." Very little cranking and winding as one would do bass fishing with crankbaits, spinnerbaits, etc. In other words, if you catfish the way most folks around here do, I really don't think you need worry too much about grooves on any kind of guide.

Thanks, Richard. You described the fishing method I plan to use. At this point, I would just love to get to fish enough to have the groove problem.

Thanks for you guys input ... I do fish as rsimms described but I do plan to cast for some bass with my rig from time to time but until I can afford to have Fat Albert build me a custom rod then I think Ill give my old trusty Ugly Stick a try .... I really want to have a custom rod made for this Abu Garcia 6500 C3 Camo edition just because the reel deserves to be on a custom rod .... I want to have a 7ft green blank, black eyes(braid quality),all black thread and a foam handle set up for cats but I need to find out about what that might cost me (I have no clue) this would be my first custom rod

Thanks puddle thats a cool rod but Im looking for something a little more dull because the reel Im using is camo ... Im looking for a flat green or flat black blank but its taking me a while because Im just now learning where to look

YOU WILL BE FINE WITH THE UGLY STIK BECAUSE OF HOW THEY ARE NOW MADE. ALL RODS IN THE PURE FISHING/JARDEN LINE WILL ALL WORK WITH BRAID SOME HAVE 304 STAINLESS STEEL GUIDES AND THE OTHERS HAVE FUJI ALCONITE CONCEPT GUIDES. NOT A PROBLEM. AS FAR AS LINE SIZE I USE ALOT OF 65LB STEALTH ON GUNTERSVILLE FROG FISHING AND IT HAS THE DIAMETER OF 20LB MONO ABOUT ONE-THIRD SIZE OF THE SAME MONO. GOOD LUCK AND SHOUT IF YOU NEED MORE INFO.
