Went bream fishing yest. with long time friend FishnFool, started out on the humps in Harrison bay and caught only one but good sized. Went to an underwater bluff on the main lake and caught lots of fish with only about 1/2 of them hand sized or better. Went to some sloughs off the main lake where a buddy from work had been catching shellcrackers over a pound. Didn't catch any over a pound but did catch some really nice ones, barely able to reach my hand around them. Frank, my buddy from work said that late afternoon is when they seem to get over the bedding areas. The fish in the sloughs were in 4-7 feet in bunches, if you caught one you would usually catch a bunch. Frank wasn't happy with how fast we were catching them, too slow, but I thought it was okay. The water temp was 68-70 and had quite a bit of color to it. We didn't get out there until the sun was high and there were no clouds, pretty day but may have put the fish off deeper than they otherwise would have. Seems to me that the bigger bream/crackers bed in water that is 4-6 or 7 feet of water and finding where the beds are is not easy with electronics. I usually use a drop shot rig for searching and when I find one I stop and fish the area very well. I do fish with bobbers sometimes but only if I know where they are and am not moving a lot. I usually fish with worms and that's all we used yest. Could catch 4 or 5 fish on one bit of worm just big enough to cover the hook. The bream on the bluff were 20+ feet deep and most were males. In total I would expect that we caught over 100 fish and that close to 50 of them were hand size or better. I was expecting not catching many deep but there were lots down there and they never slowed up, I just decided to look for other, bigger fish. I hope that the shallow bite holds up for the Crackerthon in a few weeks 'cause fishing deep for bream is not as easy for kids it seems to me. A fish fry with bream is my favorite. Thanks Frank and FishnFool for a fun day.
