my son is shooting a mathews missions craze at a low poundage in alabama we have to use at least 100gr heads what do you bow guys think would be the best broad head for him he is pulling around 40lb and has a 25"draw thanks in advance

Slick trick .are hard to beat .wasp drones are seeming to be a good head also.both these shoot like darts is well tuned bow. Slick trick leaves awesome blood trail

For a low poundage bow, you need to look for a cut on contact broad head. The G5 montec is a good example. Just make sure he practices with those heads before going. If hits em in the ribs broadside, you will be fine. I think it's more important to teach him to wait for a perfect broad side shot. Shooting, wounding, and not recovering a deer will mess his confidence up, so drill it in to him that he has to wait till he has a perfect broadside within a reasonable range. Good luck

Yes, definitely a cut on contact head, BUT at that low poundage I would never recommend a three blade. The energy lost pushing three blades through an animal at his low poundage will only set you up for weak penetration, no pass through's, weak blood trails, and heartache.

At those numbers you need to think of his set-up very similar to a traditional bow (recurve / longbow) He will be ethical with most any 2 blade broadhead. Muzzy and Magnus make some affordable ones.

Just make sure he knows how to pick his shots. Those within 30 yards, slightly quartering away and broadside are his best options at this point.

I will also mention that all hunters benefit from a higher front of center (FOC) weighted arrow. That provides the momentum especially important for pass through's in hunting situations. Pass throughs and the ability to break ribs is based of momentum NOT kinetic energy. Get his arrows between 12-20% FOC and you'll increase his lethality. That goes for all hunting set-ups, not just my opinion, but many archers have learned about the benefits of higher FOC arrows. It's physics, look up Dr. Ed Ashby he has studied this for years.

Lastly, I would leave a fishing website and look on a place like archery talk or tradbow for archery related advice. You still have some B.S. to wade through , but there is a lot of good information on those sites.

Good luck this year.

Definitely go with a fixed blade broad head. A low poundage bow like a youth bow may not have enough velocity to fully deploy a mechanical broad head. just my 2 cents

thanks for the help guys that is what i was thinking but i just wanted to run that by some other people i will be in the tree with him so i can keep him from shooting if need be i may let him use a crossbow but i want him to take his first bow kill with a compound bow he is a crack shot with the crossbow but i am a fan of compound bows i made my first bow kill with a bear whitetail hunter with 55lb draw then an xi impulse at 90lb now i have grown old and weak i use a parkrer wild fire ext thanks guys for the help wish him luck thanks again p.s. i use the slick trick 100gr they look deadly and fly good but i have not shot anything with them but with any luck i will this year

Can't beat a muzzy. My reason for voting for a 100gr muzzy is the right helical of the muzzy actual helps in flight, but just remember to shoot right helical or straight cut fletching.

Benton shooter supply is a good place to go get custom arrows built. I had 3 dozen kinetics built there and I am extremely happy.

thanks for all the help i have decided since my son can not pull a fair amount of weight on his bow that he just want bow hunt yet he can shoot his bow alot till next season then if he shoots it enough by next season he will be able to make a good shot and have enough poundage that he can make a good clean kill then we will hit the woods with the bows
