A month or so ago I dredged a Shakespeare Excursion graphite spinning rod from a watery grave on the Chick, and cleaned it up. Looked pretty good, but the tip was a bit short where it had been broken off at one point and replaced. It turned out being a comfortable rod and I was using the "new" rig for jigging spoons. The short tip didn't bother at all. Well, about a week ago I was changing line on it when the ceiling fan decided to shorten the tip a bit further. I replaced the tip again - the rod was getting a little stiffer and the two end guides were almost touching, but it was still OK. Well, this morning when I got ready to go fishing with Fishing Machine I slammed it in the door to the battery compartment and shortened it up by another foot and a half. I guess that poor rod was just accident prone and should have rested peacefully on the bottom of the lake in the first place. We held a short but dignified service for it. R.I.P.

That poor rod knew it was going to get worn out every time it came out so it must have just given up.emoBigsmile

Fished a tourney last week and my partner broke his rods. I say rods as in plural! He broke one and then ate lunch. I seen him having a problem closing the lid and then it shut...if you know what I mean. Worse part about the broken tips was he was still using them. Line would get wrapped around the 3 inch extension and arc like a pendulum to the front of the boat. Stunk getting his rattle trap out of my shirt and skin one time! I then go hooked up and leaned over to retrieve my line, good bye cell phone. Jumped in 6 feet of water and found it by listening to the constant beeping underwater. My advice if this happens; remove the battery immediately, blow dry it often when you get home, place the phone on the dash of your truck to dry out for a few days, put the battery in and pray. She is working fine! Needless to say, we weighed in early and went home....

Eric, sounds like that poor rod did finally give up. LOL

I guess that my best broken rod story is the story behind how I broke my only All-Star Rod. I was fishing an old pond, and I went to set the hook on a decent catfish...................I was using cut bait and the hit felt great! Well, when I go to set the hook on the fish, I had reeled down to get all the slack out, and then laid the wood to the fish. All I heard was "SNAP". I looked at my rod, and 3 ft. from the top, the rod had broke CLEANLY!! I managed to get the fish up to the surface but it eventually threw the hook in my failed attempts of reeling it in!

The more I think about this poor rod, I am thinking that the problems were with the caretakers rather than the rod.

Both! emoBadLanguage Usually end up getting a little too "shortened" as EricM explained in original post. I did have a sideplate on a reel fall off at Guntersville toward the end of a slow and frustrating day - I watched it slowly sink out of site. Shortly thereafter the reel came off the rod in preparation for takeoff from the flight deck (or back deck of the bass boat). The flight plan called for an approximate 5 second journey to the middle of the lake ending in a loud splashdown. Unfortunately the spool started to slide out of the reel (as there was no longer a sideplate to hold it in) and the line became slightly tangled around a couple of fingers of the launch hand. Takeoff speed and trajectory were perfect and things looked good until the line stopped feeding at the same velocity the reel was departing the flight deck. Reel abruptly stopped its flight and started reversing direction back toward the flight deck - fortunately the velocity was not great enough for it to make it back to the flight deck. The splashdown was unheard over the profanities coming from the launch hand's owner and the extreme laughing of his two fishing buddies. Casualties included one reel and minor line burns on launch hand.emoBang

you should have kept that ole thing. you never know when you might decide to break another rod. i hang my broken rods up in the garage. that way if i break another rod i can use the broken one to maybe fix another. i also keep the broken ones around so i can tell my buddies a GOOD lie when they ask me what happened to it.

I'm with you Cathooker, when I moved here I had an old kitchen waste basket with a bunch of old broken rods sitting in it and sticking out at various heights. My wife refused to let me pack it for the move, so I cut off a bunch of line guides of various sizes - can never have enough of those...

Sounds like it was becoming a good dock shooting rod and now it is wasted. emoBigsmile emoGeezer

Sometimes free isnt free, its cost ya, try to do something good and it bites you in the butt. Sounds like that rod had Napolean issues. My first day out on my newly rebuilt 1980 21 Mako classic was a classic. Took my brotjher iny brother-in-law out, he is a serious fisherman, 30-40 outfits, you know always has to buy another rig. Well he had his new starr rod and conventional (Forgot model Penn, an oldy but goodie. Started trolling, put out the downrigger, he rigged up to it and put the outfit into the scotty down rigger rod holder and we waited. Well a hoo took the bait, the rod bent, he sat up to grab it and the holder broke off the downrigger, We watchd as the outfit got great air and then into the deep blue. It happened so fast it was a shock, all my BIL did was look at me like it was my fault, crumbly something about losing one of his favorite outfits. All I could do was laugh. Not ten minutes later one of my outriggers came loose, slide down the gunnal wall off the boat and yep into the deep blue, all my BIL could do was laugh. Boating isnt a cheap sport, anything about fishing is expensive so I use the web to find deals, buy direct from the manufacturer when I can, also get info direct from the manufacturer not the retailer. came across a new manufacturer resouce site www.allboatingfishingstuff.com plenty of links to heck out and find what isnt available locally.
