if you buy a handgun from an individual and get a bill of sale, but no background check and not register it. if you have your carry permit and have to use that gun in defense. can you get in trouble for buying it from individual and not a dealer. not sure on how that works or even if bill of sale is good enough.

need to know what must do so everyone in the clear, buyer and seller. thanks.

also if out of state, like off of gunownersclub.com is any other rules or regs.

Tennessee is not a gun registering state, as far as I know. As long as the gun is NOT a stolen one, everything will be ok. There is a very good site that can answer all your questions. Tennesseegunowners.com. Myself, I'd buy it and not worry about it. I have bought guns at a gun show...no paperwork involved.

As long as you buy from someone who lives in the same state you do there is no requirement for even a bill of sale. No paper work is required by law whatsoever. It is a good idea for both parties to know the name of the person they deal with but even that is not a law here.

as far as finding out if gun is stolen. do u just call the highway patrol and give them serial number, or is there an easier way.
