Just an idea I had after spending hours on the phone the other day resolving a problem with a person that didn't speak English very well, and certainly had no idea what I was talking about! I sent this letter to Senator Corker, and another one to Senator Alexander. If this is something you can support and agree with, please send your email also.

Senator,
Congratulations on your recent re-election. I am writing you today with an idea, hopefully one that you will seriously consider. I recall fondly your stint as Mayor here in Chattanooga. Thank you for taking the time to read this proposal.
I am sure you, as well as others in your family, have had the experience of calling about a charge on a credit card, an order you placed with a company, only to be routed to some call center in India, Pakistan,Mexico or some other country. This is becoming a pervasive problem with American based companies. In order to pay the least amount of payroll, they are outsourcing call center jobs to foreign countries. Many of these call center people do not speak English very well and are very frustrating to try and make understand the issue you might be having at that time. Often calls result in an endless session of being on hold, with no resolution to the problem. I think American companies should be respectful enough of the consumer to have Americans answer the phones when a problem arises. In addition, these jobs result in thousands, if not millions of American workers being deprived of a job answering those very calls. Money that could be used to stimulate our economy is going to others that do not impact our economy at all.

I propose that you introduce and get behind, a law that would make it mandatory for any company doing business in the United States, that has a call center, or help center, to have that call center based in the U.S. that handles the American consumers. It is a simple, yet elegant solution to create American jobs here at home, stop the bleed of American dollars to countries that hate us, stop foreign call centers from providing sub-standard service, and create a strong impression with working people about where you stand on outsourcing. Please let me know your thoughts and contact me should you wish me to elaborate further. Thank you.
