Callin wrenchin2.........Tach trouble???????????

Hey James,

I forgot to ask you when I was over there last month but my tach will be reading over 5K and the needle starts jumping around, down to 3K, back to 5k, down to 4K and so on.

Should I worry or just ignore?

Sounds like a connection or a tach but possible a rectifier. The way the tach works is by counting the pulses from the poles on the stator and dividing them by the number of poles. I ususally trouble shoot those by hooking up a test tach I have. They are hard to troubleshoot at times because of how they work. Is the battery staying charged???

When I return from a fishing trip I charge all 3 batteries and then remove the - wire from the start battery because something is slowly pulling it back down if I leave the wire connected.

That may be a shorted rectifier and would explain the tach issues. Would have to do a amp draw test on it to verify it.

I need your # again James. Also, I want you to do a compression and leak down test done to the motor. What all is involved to add a trim gauge? I found a perfect match to my other gauges on e-gay and want to add it
