I have been an avid turkey hunter for the past 15 yrs. A buddy of mine's brother is going to start turkey hunting this spring. He asked for a few tips for when he hunts alone. He does not know how to call(at all).He wants to learn, and was going to buy a call. Now, mabe its just me but i havent really ever thought about which call would be easier to learn on, a box call, slate call, mouth call or push-n-pull? ? ? ?

I would tell him to buy a slate and a box call. Learn to purr on it. Spend his time and money resources on scouting and patterning the birds the first year. After some succes and listening and observing the birds he could get more, better and diffrent calls. Just my .02. Also if someone will take him along and show him when and how to call in diffrent situations would help. But tell him less is usually more.

box calls a good one, and easy. If he has the time and patience a preston pittman black diamond mouth call is the best!

Especially when that bird is in close..you don't want to be moving around at all. It is amazing the vision those birds have! You got to be still!emoGeezer

I'd say slate.

I've had a buddy who had never touched a call who went hunting with me. He was able to keep a "hung up" bird gobbling, with a slate, while I closed in and got him. Primose Ole Yeller, and pocket puppy are very easy calls to learn. Box calls can be easy as well but some have to be tuned to sound just right, and that can frustrate some beginers.
