Capt. John, Spring temps in January, Pensacola, Fishing Report, Sheepshead, Redfish, 1-29 --- 2-7

I was ready for another blustery winter morn, but when I opened the door on Jan 29th, I couldn’t believe my eyes; sunny and 64 degrees. Was this a trick from Mother Nature? Who cares! The rest of this week the temps are going to be perfect with upper 60’s. Looks like it’s time to wipe the dust off of your tackle and hit the water. Typically, it’s a little cooler this time of year, but maybe Mother Nature forgot to buy a new calendar for 2011, and that’s fine by me. Before you rush out to your favorite fishing hole, don’t forget the fish will still be in their wintertime mode. Keep your techniques slow and watch the tides, and you’ll more than likely have a productive day. Right now the trout are still on the flats in the upper bay estuaries near the mouth of the rivers. You can find some trout and reds in the ICW and around Big Lagoon, but they are in the deeper holes till the sun comes out and then they will move up on the flats to warm up. Redfish and trout are tuned in to the tides and they wait for high tide to fill up the flats and let them move up, so they can root out crabs and worms. On the warmer days of winter, fish will lay on the muddy bottom warming themselves. If I see them laying in wait, I’ll toss out a jig with a jerk shad and bring it by them slowly, and most of the time it produces a good strike. February is only a few days away, so remember that during February speckled trout is a closed season, but will open back up in March. If you like sheepshead and black-drum fishing, then February is your time to get your fill. Hit the bridges with live shrimp or small fresh cut shrimp on a #1 Gamakatsu live bait hook on a Carolina rig and hold on. The past few days the sheepshead bite has been off the charts. The bite was so good it felt like it was late March, as late March and early April are typically the best time for sheepies and black-drum. In the pass, stop over at the jetties and you’ll have some fun with sheepshead, drum (both red and black), and even a few black snapper to fill in the mix.

Thanks for the report. We are headed down to Santa Rosa in mid March. Save a few of those fish for us. Where would be the closest pier to there? Panama City or toward Pensacola? emoFish

Craig they are super finicky. Small baits like bits of shrimp or sand-fleas work best.

Hello, Buzz
The closest pier to Santa Rosa Sound is Pensacola Gulf Pier right on Pensacola Beach
Fishing in late March is a great time for Sheepies also Black Drum, and Redfish.

You will have a hard time fishing the pier for sheepshead during that time at the end of the pier, because that is Cobia season. There are some sheepshead to be caught near the middle, but your best bet is to fish Bob Sikes Bridge, This is the bridge that goes from Gulf Breeze to Pensacola Beach. During the last two weeks of March and early April the end of the pier is full with cobia fisherman.

If you have never hired a guide, give it a try, I'll do my best to show you a great fishing trip. :)
Good luck and have fun on your vacation.

I fished the Destin area Monday through Thursday for sheepshead and reds but came up empty. Only hardheads were biting. Cold and blustery the whole time.

Minner... Fishing during Jan & Feb, can be very tough conditions with all the cold fronts that hit us that time of year. It's hit and miss from one day to another.
Typicaly the bridges are good places to fish for Sheepies around Destin and around Pensacola Beach Bridge called Bob Sikes Bridge, but like I stated it's hit and miss this time of year.

I do know of a few places that the sheepies are biting right now, but the tide has to be just right.
If your in Destin, try over at the Mid Bay Bridge about 1/3 of the way in from the center and work the pilings as close as you can get, down size your leader, weight and hook and use live shrimp and you'll get a few more bites.

Like I said eariler, Late March and the first two weeks of April are the best time for big sheepies, and big Black Drum, we also catch big Redfish during that time.

Here's are two pics from last year. These were caught during two different trips. We don't catch these reds every trip in March, but there is a good chance that we'll hook up a couple.
I pulled these pics off my site..
This red was caught around the last week of March

These two nice sheepshead are typical Sheepshead during late March early April.
