Hey guys,

Some of you may be able to help me out. Especially RSimms. What is the best way to go about getting my Captains license? I want to guide in the next few years and would like to get my Captain's license for boats in the 6 pack range. I looked at the USCG website and good Lord, they want every bit of info since I was born, as well as a ton of tests and certifications.

Is this the best way to go?

Really no need for a captains license unless you really want it. Just call them up and ask for a OUPV six-pack license packet. I wouldn't call the Memphis detachment because they're back up as they have combined the New Orleans detachment since Katrina. Call the Virginia office.

OUPV (6-Pack) Inland

For uninspected, 6 passenger vessels on inland waters.
Requires 360 days total boating experience.
90 of those days must be in the last 3 years.
No offshore time is needed
U.S. citizenship is not required.
Minimum age is 18.

There's no shortcuts. Phys. Exam, Drug screen, USCG Test, etc, etc. are all required no matter if you inland or Near coastal. I took my study coarse in Bayou La Batre in Alabama and took the test after the study coarse. Had to drive to Memphis for the finger printing. 9 to 11 month ordeal.

I was looking at getting a captain's license, too. I like the embroidered hats.

I never saw it anywhere....but is there a requirement that the boat be a "commercial"-rated hull??? I mean, can I get a captain's license and charge people and take them out on a non-commercial-rated boat????

Six-pack envy ;)
