Carl Guffey, Watts Bar: BITE, snappin' turtle, banded water snake, bass(small), 5/30/2009, slowdrag
Slowdrag and I fished at the BITE today on Watts Bar. We had a plan and it sucked........ Started off the morning working ledges above Rockwood and had a couple of slicks, moved to a riprap bank around Kingston(wink, wink) throwing a small Norman baby-N first strike was a snapin turtle hooked in the inside top of the mouth(had to be 18" across). I have never heard or seen such a site, but it was fun watching slowdrag try to retrieve my crankbait. We caught a few small fish crankin and then moved down stream to a deep ledge, Slowdrag yelled Holy*$#* and I looked down to see a banded (large) water snake trying to crawl in the boat in the deep part of a wide channel area. It was fun watchin slowdrag punch a snake with a rod tip. Slowdrag got tired, but the snake decided to move off and circle the boat and load from the rear. Needless to say he(the snake)finally got tired and moved off to more hospitable realms.

As for the rest of the day, we moved into the river and ran shallow brush piles and caught large numbers of fish, just no keepers. After exhausting the brush piles we started back to weigh-in and finished the day working ledges with CR's and TR monster worms.

days count: 57 largemouth, 1 smallmouth, 1 snapping turtle, with only two keepers landed.
