SSo now I know my New Year's resolution. It was a beautiful day today. There was a flotilla in CFP like the Spanish Armada about to launch an attack on the British. So since the air temp was nice and the lake was smooth I decided to run some gas out of the boat and head North. I thought I might find some birds somewhere. I ran pass the Nuke plants and noted the water temp there is 58 but nothing happening in the boils. I stopped at the entrance to Possum Creek and did not mark any fish but noted two boats fishing outside the entrance. I ran to Grasshopper and fished a bluff. There was a net set where I wanted to fish and I had to navigate around it. I am glad I stopped short of the bluff because those small floats supporting those commercial nets are awful hard to see. They should make them use a flag type buoy to mark those things!! Nothing happening on the bluff and I did mark some fish but could not get a bite. Ran to 60 bridge and motored around but could not find any fish on the side scan or sonar. Well what the heck - it is beautiful and I am this far already - ran another few miles pass Richard's Lake on my chart. Looks like a good spring and summer fishing hole. Now I have no idea what to do cause I aint been this far and don't even know where to begin - I feel like Ferris Buellar - Anyone? Anyone? Can anyone tell me about this part of the river??? I go a llittle further and fish some rocky shoreline but nothing. I did mark a little bait. Decide to head back as I put in around 2pm and now it is 3:30 and I have a 40 minute run back. On way back I decide to stop at a beautiful rocky bluff. Water temp is 48-49 and bluff falls off to 31 FOW. I throw a jig and walk it down the bluff and something picks it up - I set the hook and I am in the fight of my life. I figure it must be a smallie cause it is going crazy. It runs around the length of the boat. I see it and it is huge as it darts back under the boat. I think about swinging it aboard and then I figure maybe I should use the net. I work the fish to the back of the boat where the net is cinched diown. I see the fish flash again and it shoots under the boat again. Now I am in the back of the boat and reach for the net and the fish darts under the boat and comes unbuttoned emoBang emoBang Are you kidding me!! I have wanted to boat a big smallie all year and the best I could do was 4lbs during the summer. Now this fish had to be 5+ maybe 6+ - It looked big in the water and pulled harder than any bass I ever hooked. So I figure maybe lightning can strike twice and work the area for another 20 minutes when BAM! I hook up again and this fish feels even bigger but could be the same one - I have a ton of line out and it starts coming to the surface - I point the rod down to try to keep the fish from jumping and --- the dag gone hook pulls free. emoBang emoBang I stick around another 15 minutes even rigging a float and fly but cant get lightning to strike three times. Oh well - I Know where you live fish and I'll BE BAACK! So my New Year's resolution is to catch that fish!

I enjoyed reading your story. We probaly passed each other on the lake. I launched at Dayton Boat Dock in Dayton and fished for Crappie a while in my usual spots and didn't catch a fish. So ,like you, the weather was nice and the lake was calm so I headed South. Ended up going to Sequoyah. The water in that area is a lot wider than the river around Richland Creek. I had been fishing in that area only 1 time with Fishing Machine last year. There is so much water I had no idea where to start. I did stop and fish the dock of the house that the back yard fell in the lake but didn't catch anything. I stopped for a minute in the mouth of Sale Creek and managed one small Crappie. It was a nice day to ride around a while, I just wish I knew some places to fish in that area. Happy New Year to everyone and maybe I can beg a trip with some of you guys that fish that area with sucess sometime. emoScratch emoSmile

I am pretty sure it said Richards Lake on the graph. That was several miles up from 60 bridge with a bend in the river and it shoots off the bend with a marked channel although it looked kinda shallow. Also on my graph the 60 bridge is about 100 feet further up river than it should be. Don't know why because everything else on the Lowrance is pretty accurate. emoScratch

It should have read Richland Creek instead of Richards Lake. The water at the mouth is about 12-15ft if you stay close to the markers. Also at Hwy. 60 bridge, your map may have been referring to the old road which had a ferry crossing until the new bridge was built, it was just up river from the bridge. emoSmile

Bill enjoyed meeting you the other night. Glad you joined our little fun club. But. I'm just like you, I have never been able to get the 5 plus smallie in the boat....I've always wanted it. If you need help on your next trip looking for him give me a call. I'LL BE YOUR NET MAN...LOL...
