I left the weigh ins with a few more people to go but so far Galen James and Paul Morgan were leading with 27 3/4 lbs with a 9.47 lb lgmth and a 4.77 smallie to boot. 2nd was 25 something, 3rd was 22 something by coleman/grizzle, and 4th was 20 lbs.

Nice sacks of fish by many folks today who fished in this nasty weather.

Churly just called and he and his partner finished in the Top 10 w/ 4 keepers going for 19 and change. The bag was anchored with a 7+ LM.

Way to go Churls!

The $5K fish were:
Largemouth 9.34#?
Smallie Almost 6#
And a 5.05# Spot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They paid 10 places and you had to have almost 19 to get money! ( out of 62 boats)

I had a 7.72# LM good for the second big fish.

Our lake is rockin!

Thats not really true Churly. The spot money was paid out on a smallmouth with a tooth patch. It weighed 5.50 lbs. I saw the fish and it was a smallmouth.

Some big Ol Bags guys! Congrats to you all that weathered this weather today!

All I can say is the state record for a spot is 5.8. The fish to qualify for a state record has to be sent off for DNA testing and this fish would not qualify. We had a 4.99 green as grass spot and it's a shame that TWRA makes a ruling that considers a fish with a toothpatch would be a spot that would not qualify for a state record. Sorry for the rant but I am not taking away from the guys who caught it, I would do the same and CATCH done an outstanding job and have done what they said. Catch, I am in no way bashing your guy's tx. I think TWRA needs to make up their minds on a state level.

Guys the only way that the average fisherman can differetiate a spot from a largemouth is the toothpatch. Unfortunately, some largemouth and about 10% of smallmouth have a toothpatch. Its not a perfect system just the best one we have. The only other option is to say that all "green" fish must be 15". Then you diminish the harvest of spots to nothing. TWRA is in a no win situation. It's not perfect but its the best we can do and still try to address fishermens concerns about harvesting spotted bass while trying to control the harvest of undersize largemouth bass. I have found that most people on this forum are very knowledgable but the truth is most fishermen are woefully ignorant about how to determine what species of bass they have caught.

I appologize! I didn't know about the dispute.

Hey, PJ

The State did make up their mind due to the efforts of Carl Guffey. "if it has a tooth patch, it's a Spot"!! You guys got a great "Green Spot", but it got beat by a "Brown Spot". I can't wait to hear the outcry when someone brings five 12"-14" Brown Spots to a weighin. The TWRA is in a no-win situation as the hybridization of Black Bass escalates. Forget about State Records. None of these big spots will pass DNA testing. In fact, I'm just guessing, but I bet the fish that holds the current record could not pass the DNA test since it was caught in 1989.

Hey guys I just want to say on behalf of CATCH ministry thank you for making this an awesome fishing tournament. I along with CATCHMAN (our TX director) made the call that the fish was a spot instead of a smallmouth. The stinking thing had a tooth patch and it was very distinguishable. We took pictures of it so there would be no question that it was there. The state is in the middle and there is no easy solution. However, momma says that if it looks like a duck it is a duck. That fish had all the markings of a smallmouth. To see a green spot that was over five lbs was awesome too. When the word gets out about this tournament I hope the state will look at this lake a little more closely and accept the fact that a smallmouth can have a tooth patch. Brown, green, yellow, pink, or blue it doesn't matter to me. I loved seeing those fish come in. We will abide by the state rules in all our tournaments. I just hope you guys had a great time and we look forward to next year's tournament and hopefully by God's grace we will have twice the number of boats. And remember one thing next time you see CATCH ministry working in your community taking someone fishing that would never had the oppurtunity to do so, remember by supporting our ministry you had a part in them be able to do so.

Just one ? for you MB

What will TWRA think of me having a fish fry with 15 12" brown fish with a toothpatch? I can answer that, I will be cited! Talk to a TWRA and see! Thats exactly what I was told.

All the ones that are for the fishery and are for this you r truly messed up. All that says is no limit on the chick if they are spots. So if these so if they call these spots I will have a spot feast like you have never seen. EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE BROWN>>>>>
