Catfinger was dying to get in the woods since she didnt get to go yesterday. I had a lot of work to do last night, and as such didnt feel I could make it to the lease in the AM. We decided to just get in the stand in the back field here at the house. Of course with the moon so bright last night, there were 6 deer feeding until 2am, so I was not to optimistic about one showing up come daylight. Got in stand about 7:20. About 7:45 I was telling her to make sure and watch the field to her left. She calmly states, I see a deer walking into the field.... I dont see anything, as I left my glasses in the house. I pull up the binos, and sure enough, a doe is walking out. I have her rest the gun on the railing of the stand, and watch with the binos. I hear the safety go off, and she says she is ready. I told her to shoot at-will.........BOOMMMMMM. I watch the deer get real low and run out of the field, under the fence, and down hill before loosing sight of it. We get down, and walk over to find NO blood.

It was about a 90 yrd shot, but she had a good rest. We cross the fence, and start looking, criss-crossing back and forth where I saw it run. There is a pond down at the bottom of the hill, and I felt we should track all the way down to it to make sure. Got down to the pond, and I was scanning the large field to see if anything was lying in it. I explained that deer like to go to water when injured, and if she was hit good, this would be a good.............what is lying 20 yards in front of me in the neck of this pond???.......a deer with guts hanging out of it, sitting straight up looking at us! She was not ready so we backed out of there to give her as much time as possible. If I had gone after her, she really only had one way to go, though me, or into the pond! The thought of her getting into the water, and dying there was not a fun one. That was at 8:10. It is about 9:45 now, and we are going to check on her again.

To be continued..........................

.......so we sneak over to the pond, as I dont want to spook it if its still alive. I ease up and take my binos and look to the back of the pond......no deer

. I am stunned.....I continue on to see if there is blood or a trail to see where she could have gone, and see it....floating in the pond! Pretty cool I say! Catfinger syas, "How we gonna get it out of there?" ......he he

he he....I aint getting wet! I get Catfinger a rope to lasso the head, and drag it out of there. 60 yards through tthe woods and into the Ranger with the help of Cat Head.

Upon examination of the shot, she hit it about right, but the angle was bad. Entering just a little back in the rib-cage, and exiting too far back as you can see from the pic...

. The bullet, or what was left of it, had come to rest in the hind leg knee-cap. The joint was quite damaged, so she definatly couldnt use that leg.

I have her shooting a Weatherby Vanguard Youth bolt action in 7mm-08. I scoped it with a Bushnell Elite 2-7x32, which is plenty for that gun with great glass in it. So far 3 shots from that junior cannon, and we have eaten 1 buck (her 8-point) a hog I killed in AL, (smoked it up!), and now the tasty morsel of a doe. It is now in the cooler, ready for some grill-work later tonight!

Spur, my friend, you are doing a really good thing by spending quality time with your children and by teaching them the love of the outdoors. emoWorthy

RE: Cat finger in the deer stand........

Thanks for the kudos guys. AS proud as yall are, I cant tell you how proud I am. This is her third year deer hunting, and she is just a calm as can be when it comes crunch-time. I am always a wreck. The first year was 2 does in 45mins, then the nice 8 point last year, and now this one. I know some will say why let her kill such a young deer, but I am a firm believer that ANY child that is willing to get in the woods, you let them harvest any legal animal possible. Over time they will decide on their own when it is time to start selectively harvesting trophy animals. My .02!

Spur, tell Catfinger for me that she is doing alright with the hunting and fishing. I'll have to take her fishing again so that I can beat her since she beat me last time.

Congrats! Hat's off to you for starting her right and taking the time to teach her the correct way to harvest deer. It also does not hurt to harvest those does since we seem to be having such a good replishment of the resource. I have seen more deer this year then ever before and with the threat of blue tongue taking a few doe is a good idea to keep the heard down. It seems as if the issue is mostly confined to where there is a dense population of deer and a need to thin the heard.emoApplause Jmax
