some folk use dough baits, (learn to make breab, but dont cook it). These doughs can have blood and/or cheese flavorings, the stinkier the cheese the better. Some foks use packed wheaties, it has to be compressed hard to get it to stick. Dog food is said to work, if you can find a way get it on a hook.

I have never caught a catfish with the prepared baits like they sell at wallyworld and I have tried quite a few. The best bait I have ever used is shad guts from gizzard shad, yellow tail minnows, cut up skip jack like Spur mentioned and whole brem. I have found out that you will get a bunch more bites from the skipjack and brem if you scale the fish first, this seems to release more of the oils in the fish making it easier for the cats to find it. Keep these baits moving at all times by constantly raising and lowering your rod tip about a foot or so and this also helps you make contact with the bottom when your bait falls into a hole.

Cheap hotdogs cut into 3/4 to 1 inch pieces marinated overnight in cherry jello and garlic salt. Medium raw shrimp are deadly at times. These baits will get you smaller fish on average with the occaisional bigger cat.
Stinkbait works on channel cats and on pond catfish but river fish don't like it much.

i prefer large shiners or small bluegill but i have caught a lot of channel cats on 1 inch cubes of cheddar cheese, only problem is i usually eat most of the bait.emoBigsmile

Spam. Got my PB of 50 lbs on Spam this past spring and a 25 lber to boot.

Skipjack is the gold standard. Theadfins work but they don't freeze well or last long once thawed.

In the spring we catch 1-2 channels per trip bass fishing with pig n jigs and we catch cats at random on jigging spoons including a 12 lb flat head, 20 lb flathead, and 30 lb blue this year to name a few.

I have had good luck using red worms and chicken livers and Hotdogs with cheese in them. emoScratch What is Skipjack emoQuestion emoScratch

Its a oily baitfish thats caught below the dams on small jigs...

Go to the top of the page and do a "Search" on Skipjack Herring and there should be enough info to keep you bisy for a while...
