After fishinfool said he was finding fish shallow I just had to go to the wolf and see if I could find some crappie. I did and they were only in about 5 to 6 feet of water and were hitting anywhere from 1 to 3 feet deep. The majic fomula today was current with wood. Nothing on the medal docks only the wood ones or the fallen trees in that depth. I hit three different docks where they were stacked. I was down by polo's house and heard a whistle and looked up to see polo waving at me and yelling did I want a partner.emoSmile I said get your stuff and come on. At that time I had caught about 50 and he got with me. Right at first we did not do well but finally hit another dock they were on and had about six in a row. We managed another 20 or so before calling it quits at 5. I came home with a nice mess of 15 good sized crappie. I just cooked up a mess of them and ate way too much but boy they were good.emoHungry I love this time of year when the fish start moving shallow and it becomes a lot easier to find them. Time to get out there if you haven't already been doing so. All mine came on a red/chartruse crappie tube and polo was using his usual bass assassin clear silver dipped in chartruse.emoCool Jmax

Wow!!! what a day. Even the wind cooperated with us today but we only managed 20 crappie

Whisler, what I thought was wierd today for me was I could not figure out why some docks had fish and others did not but they pretty much looked the same. Even more strange was the crappie would be stacked all in the same place on the dock. It might have 20 pilings but only two would have all the fish. The others would not even get a hit. In the one where Polo and I hit them they were right out in front of it. I do not mean on the front piling but actually in front of the dock. We never did see what caused them to be out in front and I may have screwed up that spot getting too close with the trolling motor. It was fun to say the least and you just had to keep pitching until you hit the right place.emoScratch Jmax

Jmax, now you have gone and got me all confused. I was giong to do like the other posters and fish the main channel edges. Now you tell me shallow water. Oh what to do, what to do???

Great going. I'm happy you found them. I have fished in the wolf every time I have gone fishing and never yet got the first hit. Now I'll have to try it again tonight our in the morning.

Yep LL, try it again. They are moving into the area. It happened last year too about this time. Give it another week at this type of weather and they will be in the flats. That is when it really gets fun. Most of the crappie today were males but a few were females very bloted with eggs. It will not be long. Last year about the first week of April you could go into the flats in the wolf and use a bobber with a small tube and wear them out. It may hite sooner with this warm weather we seem to be having here lately.emoThumbsup Jmax

I know what you mean about some strange patterns. I can definitly relate to them being out in more open water with deep water nearby. The dock piling thing happened to us on last fri. We have been getting some bites also where they will swim up and our slipfloat will tilt over and not travel left or right.

Jmax, thanks for picking me up. It was fun and caught lots of fish. Many were small but many were good sized too. A mixed bag in the creek. The fish on the main lake did average quite a bit bigger. Fun just to get the line stretched though.

Jmax that is exactly what we were seeing. We managed all of our fish yesterday in front of one dock and strangely the fish weren't really under the dock, they were just out from it. We'd try other spots 20 or 30 feet away and not get a hit. Congrats on what sounds like a wonderful day! I just wish to the heck I could go tomorrow but I've made plans with some buddies to go see the movie "300". 70 crappies is amazing! Nice to see them turning on and you are absolutely right about last year. A lot of people were fishing for them deep and they snuck into the shallows before anyone realized it. Just curious did you guys hook up with any bass while you were crappie fishing?

Transition time, crappie can be found deep, shallow, roaming flats, around cover or just suspended. No real pattern or should I say multiple patterns.
Man I wish I could go but this work thing is interfering.

We caught a bunch of James's relatives.emoLaugh Like polo said they ran small. About a 4 to 1 ratio but I just love to go up to fallen trees or dock pilings and pitch out a little tube and feel that tick. It about becomes an addiction to getting a hit this time of year. You get one and you got to get some more.emoBigsmileJmax

Great job there Jmax. I've been in Maryville the past few days tending to the sick. I'll get back out there on Monday, the good Lord willing.
