Changed the waterpump out today on my mid 80's Mercury 150. Pulled the foot fine, changed the pump ok, but I'm having trouble getting the foot back on. There appears to be something between where the splines on the foot and the splines on the motor meet up and it is blocking the path. It looks like a bushing, a spacer or something. Anyway, it will not let me line the splines up. Is this normal or do I have something there that should not be there? Thanks for any info.

Jim

Did you try moving the flywheel to get the splines to line up, thats where I have trouble. As to something thats blocking the path, not sure, but Wrenchin2 (James) will take care of any questions you may have!

That's the truth there-Wrenchin will see this and tell you everything you need to know!

OH NO!!!! That is the drive shaft seal on the crank. AKA seal carrier. It is #7 on the picture and #8 is the "O" ring that seals it. They sometime pull off with the lower and will be right in the way of putting the lower back.

You have 2 choices..... Pull the powerhead and put back in the bottom of the crank (smart choice) or take something and get it lined up and then very GENTLY slide the lower on (not my practice but people do it often). That seal goes in the bottom of the crank to keep moisture out of the spline and corroding.

Hope this helps!!!

I was afraid it was something like that. I appreciate the answer on this. Not sure right now which direction I need to go.

Guess I need to machine a tool to allow the installation of it with out the removal of the poweread!!!!!! It is not big of a deal to remove the powerhead. I have had that happen to me a few times.

I haven't had a chance to work on it yet. It was good to talk to you the other night - I sure appreciate the tips and advice. I figure before it's over, I'll be bringing it over to the Valley sometime if you think you might be interested in looking at it. Might even get a tune up while she's there if you fool with that kind of stuff.
