Chick 9/9/06 Bass

Spent Saturday on Chick with a friend from work. We launched out of Armstrong boat ramp in Soddy Creek. We caught fish consistently throughout the day on just about every kind of structure and cover you could imagine. Quite a few of the areas I had marked to fish were covered up with boats when we got there, so we ended up fishing leftover areas most of the day. We found fish everywhere we tried, we just never found that magical spot that we could sit on and catch fish after fish. We caught around 30 largemouth & spot, and a few smallmouth. I even managed to catch my first meanmouth - what a beautiful fish. Big fish of the day was an 18.5" smallmouth that I guesstimated at 4lbs, but on the scales it came in at 3lbs. Lies!

Caught the smallie in 12-15' of water over a gravel/sand bottom with laydowns on a deep running crankbait. Bounced off a log and it hit. There were some schoolers in the area on sub-surface bait balls. The bait were staying down because of all the traffic. I did see some stunned crappie, white bass & minnows floating nearby that obviously *did* get too close to the surface.

No pictures of the meanmouth - it was only 9 or 10 inches long. Pulled it in, took a good look & threw it back. Afterwards I wished I had taken a picture.
