Went out again tonight to see if my fish were still on. Launced around 7pm and tried a Zoom Horny Toad around some grass. It was getting crushed but after missing my 5th or 6th fish, I gave up. I don't know why I couldn't hook up on it tonight. Caught several dinks that were busting shad. They came on a variety of lures including DJW buzzbait and DJW 3/4 oz spinnnerbait, Sammy, and vibrating bait. After dark hit one of my holes and immediately had a nice 4lber smash a big spinnerbait. Caught a few more before leaving on a T-rig. Had to leave 'em biting for Saturday.:)

Hey Davo you sound like you are on them well.emoThumbsup To help us guys that are not but not give away any secret spots when you say "hole", what depth are we talking about? Main lake, point, secondary, main, creek,...anything else to help us out in locating the same kind of area would be greatly appreciated. I am hoping to get mine early, but after the sun goes down I am worried. I cannot seem to get bit after dark. I may just go to the ramp and wait for you guys to come in.emoLaugh Jmax

Hey Jmax, the areas that I have been catching them in are near a point that is around 20ft deep, it leads to a gently sloping flat. I have been positioning my boat in about 12-15 ft and casting up to 3 ft. It's just a gentle slope and I honestly can't figure out why it's such a good area. I think that the fish are leaving the deeper water and cruising that slope and moving into the cove. But heck I don't know. I'm not one for fishing really slow, but for some reason at night I can do it easily. I've always said that at night if you think you are fishing slow, slow down some more. However that 4lber came off a slow rolled spinnerbait and abolutely destroyed it. Whenever I get really agressive hits I think it's because there are other fish in the area and they are competing. Hope that helps, like you need it.;)

But as far as you going to the ramp and waiting, I would suggest you get there around 8:15 or so and just wait for everyone else to finish. emoPoke

I will be fishing a T on Friday night with my club and I will post the results Saturday morning. Jmax, I too have not been able to do very well after it gets dark, but the last hour of light has been awsome. My gameplan is to fish the deep structures and get 5 keepers before it gets dark, then go fishing for the big bite. if the water moves I would stay on mainlake structure all night!

I can't believe you're going fishing Fri nite. You better get some rest before all your buddies dress you up like a woman and take incriminating pics of you for your bachelor party. Have fun, churls ... been nice knowin' ya...

Davo,
I was in the same boat as you on the horny toad.
First off, what kind of hook are you using?? I am running a 5/0 Zoom Horny Toad hook.

When I first started fishing them, I would just drop the rod tip when I had a stike until I could feel the fish. That didn't work!!

Now, as soon as one hits it, I press the button and strip off one arm length of line real quickly. Then I lower the rod tip and just give 'em all the time they want to take. I let them swim with it until my line gets TIGHT!! then I set the hook for all I got. I have found that a 7' or better length rod works well and a heavy action. You still miss a few, but not too many by letting them take it for about 15 seconds. Don't worry about them swallowing it, I have never seen it happen.

Hope this helps ya.

Thanks fella's,...Davo like I have said before I have not fished at night since moving here until the other night when CCSM and I went and this week. I know all too well you can not fish the same way most of the time between day and night. With that said yes I need all the help I can get after dark. I also agree with Churly in that if I get lucky I might pick up a limit in the hour and a half before dark if I get the right bites.emoScratch Not a problem catching fish the final hour, but it could be a size problem. emoCool Jmax
