I had an hour this afternoon to fish so I went out to see if those big crappies were still in the same area as yesterday. I only caught one, he/she was on the very tip of a steep drop into the channel that was about 22-26 feet deep. The fish was right on the bottom in some rubble/rocks right on the drop. The fish was within 15 feet of a marker buoy. No not a navigational buoy but a buoy that I threw out on the spot that I wanted to fish. The wind was whipping and even with the buoy it was very tough to stay close to the marker. I am looking forward to fishing when there is little or no wind so that I can examine the area more thoroughly. The crappies I've been on have been few but big. I think that I have caught 6 now that were just this size, better crappies than I can remember catching. He/she was right at 14 inches and had a very wide body, a very healthy fish! I still think that fishing with a map and using buoys will bring me more and better fish and I plan to stick with the strategy. It's been paying off. The water temp. in the mid portion of WT was 54+ degrees and Harrison bay was 51 degrees. The water was clearer today. I was still using a 1/16th ounce jig head with a 1/5 inch Panfish Assassin with the tail dipped in chartreuse dye.

Was the marker buoy an orange one with a 16oz lead weight close to HBSP???

I realized when I got home I was one marker short........

There was a bunch of fish there yesteday, but they had a severe case of lock jaw!

I wish that I had found your buoy but no, it was mine. I lost two buoys this week. I threw two out trying to mark a hump out in front of Harrison bluff and both were pulled down in the current. I had never lost one like that before but it was a pain losing two.

Being an Arkie that has never crappie fished in January......

I was always duck hunting, and never crappie fished before March! Then the lakes I fished were shallow by comparison to Chick! This depth thing on Chick has me amazed!

Sometimes they are at 25' and then the next time they are at 12'?!?!?! And the water temp and weather will be the same on each day!

I am use to cathcing crappie in Arkansas in March in 3 foot of water! I have caught enough in Douglas Lake fishing 12 inches deep to sink a battle ship!!

These deep crappie are gonna kill me trying to figure'em out!

One last thing.....The deepest spot in Douglas Lake is 13 foot!

For some reason, I do like Chickamauga, and plan on fishing there until, I figure it out, or die trying!!hehe

Polo, sounds like you have a nice hole with some quality fish. I bet in the next few weeks and into Feb. they will start to stack up in there and bite better for you with more consistancy.
