A little late here, but by the time I got home yesterday, I didn't feel like getting on the 'puter.
I launched from Grasshopper a little later than I'd wanted. I got up at four, then farted around the house too much and didn't get to launch until 6:45. I headed straight to the Hi to fish some grass. I started with a black/red DJW buzzbait and a Sammy. The area I stopped in had more surface activity than I've seen in a while. Unfortunately, the bite wasn't so hot. I changed over to a firetiger colored DJW BB and quickly buttoned up a nice nice little 14 incher that thought he was way bigger. That was at 7:10 AM. At 7:40 I caught another on the same BB, slightly larger than the first, and then the TW bite was over. It's a shame too, because I had a steady breeze and overcast skies until around noon. Both fish were in less than 2' of water around grass and reeds.
The most bizarre thing I've seen in a while happened while in Deadhorse Slough. I was in a little cut, not much deeper than 3 feet, when I noticed a huge back and dorsal just under the surface. At first, I thought it was a gar. When I got closer I realized it was a Stripe. This dude was every bit of 3+ feet long and maybe 25-30 lbs. He stayed with me forever, just casually swimming by the boat. Every now and then, he'd wander off, then come right back as if to check in! He must have stayed with me for over 30 minutes ... a rather social fella.
I ended the day back in Grasshopper and caught another off of a laydown on a T-rigged worm and then one more on a blk/blue DJW jig with a wakeboarder beating me to death.
What a morning to be out! It was cool, overcast, and breezy most of the morning and for the first few hours, I had the Hi to myself. Water temps were between 77 and 79 on the Hi and 80 in Grasshopper. Visibility was around 1'.
