Well, I promised info on my efforts in the first CCF event, held out of Grasshopper on 11-12-05. We started at 8:00 am and there was fog out on the main lake. Water temps around 60 degrees and clear. Following some advice from my friend polo-dog (thanks Mark for the help!), my future son in law and myself made our way out, very carefully due to the low water, to fish some main lake points. With some water moving, I had hoped to pick up some quick legal spots before hunting bigger fish. Well, I caught a 12 1/2" spot on about the second cast and thought it was going to work pretty well. There wasn't a lot of baitfish activity on the screen and we only managed one more small fish before turning our attention to deep rock banks in the creeks. We started catching fish immediately on finesse worms, but they were all largemouths and all measured 12 to 14 1/2". I was surprised that no spots were in the mix, since we fished 18 - 25 foot deep. Anyway we caught several, but (and this hurts) we lost about 4 real good fish right at the boat. I guess we just weren't sticking them good enough! I don't mean 4 or 5 lb. fish, but real good 2 lb. fish, the kind that count in a tournament! We did this awhile until they seem to slow and then moved into a slough with shallower water and stumps. Nothing was happening there and we moved to a chunk rock bank with about 8 foot water and caught several more just under the magic 15" length. We finished up by fishing some wood cover in the creek in deep water and caught a couple more 13 - 14" fish. All in all a lot of fun, but as I learned going into Grasshopper today, when the water is this low, be careful. My prop and skeg are not happy about how I treated them today! It was fun to spend time in God's creation today and admire his handiwork! I also enjoyed spending time with Vince, my future son in law. Don't tell him, his head will only get big, but I think my daughter made a good choice, he is an ambitious hard working young man who has trusted Christ and makes an effort to show it! Everyone be careful and I hope to see more of you at a future CFF event.
