Had some clients from Mississippi in town for Spring Break on the water (Chickamauga) today for a half-day trip. We did pretty well... 23 crappie in 2.5 hours (14 or 15 keepers). Then we went after bluegill and added a dozen or so to the livewell. 36 crappie & bluegill combined. They had fun... it was the first "real" fishing experience for their 8 year old boy. I think we've got a new "fishing recruit." Will try to add a photo later.

Great to hear rsimms, are the bluegills shallow? Are they on the humps yet? What did you use to catch them? They are the best in my book for a fry and almost no one really targets them hard. I have a couple of humps that they tend to be on once the water comes up and I usually use bits of worms under slip bobbers or drop shot set ups for them. For non-stop action they can be the best! They are also sweet in your mouth.

Nope... bluegill are still deep. Fishing river channel bluffs... 20 & 25 feet of water (drumking knows my favorite spot ;) ). Bluegill are mostly suspended around 15 or 18 feet. Fishing 1/16th oz. tube jigs tipped with a wax worm. Fish parallel, cast and let 'em fall for at least a 10 or 12 count and then gentle up & down retrieve.

Yeah, let us know if the bluegill are in the shallows. My kids are coming with my father-in-law and I on Saturday for a few hours and it would be nice if they could catch a few. They wore them out last year in the spring at Booker T with those Gulp maggots.

I'd say they could catch some now using method described above. Had an 8-year old youngster today with no fishing experience. I was casting the jig for him, but he was doing his own "lure retrieving/catching"). It took him about 20 or 30 minutes of frustration before he finally started getting the hang of detecting the strike and setting the hook. But I will say he figured it out quicker than his Dad. They throughly enjoyed the "learning" about as much as they enjoyed the catching.

I have some spots where you and your kids can easily catch 50+ good ones a day once the water is up. Let me know if you are interested.
