Fished with Tom B. today. Planned to fish for bass and if they wouldn't cooperate go for something else. Fished for bass for a few hours. The places that I really wanted to fish and marked the most fish on were, to use the words of a 60's song "Blowin' in the wind". I don't know what the speed of the wind was but it was just too fast. Whitecaps were on Harrison bay. My trolling motor did well, I was glad to see that I could keep up with wind and current but it was just uncomfortable fighting it all the time. Did catch a couple of dinks in the first 1/3 of a spawning slough but other than that it was slow. Caught them on rattle traps, one on silver with blue back and one on a crawdad colored one. Also caught a "Tennessee Tarpon" (skipjack herring) on a rattle trap and kept him for cut bait. Finally decided that the bass weren't going to cooperate and neither was the weather and decided to go for a sure thing-catfish. We caught 2x5lbers and one 8 1/2lber on the cut herring. On the way back to the house, stopped off at the underwater drop that I found yesterday and caught a 1+ lb crappie there on a 5/8oz red spinnerbait if you can believe that. There were lots of fish suspended off the drop and she hit as I pulled the bait up off the drop to the boat. We had fun but got wind burn.

I'll bet Harrisson Bay looked like one of the Great Lakes with all those whitecaps! Sounds like you had a fairly productive day, considering the extreme bursts of wind. Those big slabs have an ego that is equal to, or possibly greater than, the largemouth bass. This time of year, it is not uncommon to hook them on large cranks and spinnerbaits.

Hay Polo-Dog, I know what you mean! I took a couple of my students over near the Yacht club, we were fishing from the bank, and we were blown all aver the place. Sorry to say we did not stay out long. After I took them home I went to Hamiltons and got some new line on my reels and decided to stop off at Wolfetever bridge on Hwy 58 and it was hard to believe that the wind was no problem but just a few yards out in Harrison Bay nothing but white caps. I caught 2 12 in crappie,1 small mouth, sveral huge shad in a little over an hour. I lost two big fish was not able to get them to break the water. I think they were probally big crappie since those shad love to break the water and fight like a tarpon.
