Got out this morning on chickamauga to chase some ducks and it was cold as heck and fairly slow. We only shot twice, but we had a quadruple on the last goround. Turned out to be a fairly good day with some new ducks to shoot at. This front we had this past weekend must have pushed a few down. Got a great suprise to end the day with my first ever black duck that will soon be in the hands of shane smith. Me and my partner ended up with 3 greenheads, 1 suzie, and 1 black duck.

Black duck definitely means "new ducks!" That's great... congratulations! And Shane Smith is CERTAINLY the man to mount a great memory!

Ive never had waterfowl mounted because they are a little pricy. Ive hunted arkansas and tennessee since 1993 and ive only seen 4 black ducks since. Im sure that there are a few around, i just never have had any luck with em. Shane is definatley THE MAN.

Great bird! I have only been fortunate to shoot one and he was shot at close range so he didnt make it to the taxi. Did it come in as a single or mixed in with the mallards? The one i killed worked the paint off the decoys and finally gave me a shot coming over the back of the blind close enough i could have grabbed its feet. Tried to wait and let it get out a bit further but man my heart was pounding. Congrats on the mallards too 5 in one morning in two volleys is a great day and good shooting.

Nice Hogger! A friend of mine got into a BUNCH of blacks on the Gun last year. They had 8 hunters in the party, and every one got a limit....pretty cool!

Congrats on the Black Duck......I`ve been hunting ducks around here for about forty years and I can`t remember more than one or 2 ever being killed and they were singles. Ive had flocks circle us just out of range for 10-15 minutes to land just out of range and swim away. Definitly the hardest ducks to decoy in our area. Most of the ones Ive seen were on Douglas and Cherokee many years ago. I think they`ve had a tuff time over the years and limit was one for years best I remember. Don`t even know what the limits are now ...I`ve just about given up on it ..I can`t get excited about hunting in 70 degree weather. My last adventures were on Watts Bar and when the grass went away so did the the ducks that would actually stop and stay a few days at a time. I don`t get much thrill out of shootin` the dock ducks. And the real thrill was foolin 20-30 duck flocks into comin in the decoys.
As and afterthought....I was coming in from crappie fishing one day last week and jumped a flock of about 25 out in the main channell in Tellico about Clear Creek and my first thought was that they were Blacks....they appeared slighly larger than mallards and I couldn`t get the lighting on them the right way to see for sure if they were Blacks....but it brought back memories.

the limit on them is 1 per day. But very rarley do you see them around in numbers. Took my bird to shane today and he said he has had three blacks ducks dropped off this year from around stevenson alabama and he killed one a few weeks back. He also had a greenhead that was killed in otlewah that had a toe tag and a band. Never heard of the toe tags but sure nuff it was like the size of a necklace clasp, and it was atached in the webing of the ducks foot. pretty neat:eek:
