Got out tonight at about 7:00 tonight with a good friend and his son, Mike and Chase Cooper. We went straight to the main lake and fished my submurged bluff, 17-20 foot of water dropping to 40-45 feet. Fish were stacked on the edge of the drop but the fishing was slow. The current was moving very fast and it was hard to hold to the bottom with a 1/2 oz sinker so increased to 3/4 or 1oz. We used frozen shad from the baits that EricM had cast me up about a month ago. These were 5-6 inchers that we cut in half. When we had used up all the big shad I got out the threadfins that I had cast up late last fall that were in the 2-3 inch range and the fish ate them up just the same. It was great to be able to use frozen baits from months ago and not having to spend the time looking for fresh baits, even though it would have been better to have fresh. The wind was blowing right onto the bank and there were 1-2ft swells to begin with and that made it almost impossible to keep good boat position with the trolling motor so I decided to anchor, not optimal. Chase caught most of the fish and we ended up with 7 cats with all but two in the 7-11.5lb range. All were blue cats save the first one that we caught which was a channel cat that weighed right at 8 lbs. I expected better results with the current moving so well but with the wind to contend with I guess that we did okay. It was a beautiful night to be on the water as the wind died down a bit near sunset.
Here's a pic of one of the first blues that we caught.
