Finally a day with some calm wind! Nikie and I went out for a few hours after work tonight and scouted around for some crappie. It was a beautiful evening and a wonderful sunset. We ran upriver beyond the Nuke and fished a few brushpiles and then trolled some flats a bit on our way back in. We managed 15 Yellow Bass and 15 Crappie in a little over an Hour with 8 keepers. Most of them came from 9-12 ft on 1/16oz jigs just before sunset. We only needed to keep 5 (that's all I wanted to clean) and just now split 10 filets with taters/onions and hot sauce for Dinner. They were incredible!

I had best luck with red/chart & yellow/white. Once we get an extra hour of daylight I may try going more often after work if the wind is nice and calm. They hit best tonight about 5:30.

It was a fantastic crappie afternoon wasn't it? It sounds like you have some really good spots out there DHaun. Were most of the fish on the brush or on the flats? Were they main lake flats or were they in creeks or sloughs? DK was thinking that late in the day that the fish that we were on near the main flow would work their way back into the sloughs/shallows as the water warmed. Just curious if that's where you found them.

Polo, Yes, most larger crappie came off some flats away from the main river adjacent to a deeper water point in 9-12ft, but that's also what we happened to be fishing near the end of the day. Earlier most of the small crappie, a huge golden shiner, and several bluegill came upriver in a slough off a brushpile in 15ft. Water temp was 53. I have not been out enough to form a real pattern - I'm just fishing a few spots I know of...many were already occupied tonight. If DK is thinking thats what the fish are doing late in the day then I'm listening...I hope I get a chance to catch a few more this year emoThumbsup

Way to go. Makes me wish I worked 1st shift so I could get in on those short PRODUCTIVE evening trips.. emoThumbsup emoThumbsup
