Well I finally got out for the first trip this year! I know, I know shame on me:-( I knew the Chick would be a zoo on Saturday and the current was too much for Riverpark so I put in at Shellmound and fished close to the dam on the Nick. I've read the reports that the Chick was on fire this weekend so maybe I should have put up with the crowd because the Nick was dead at least for me and everyone else I ran into. Water temps were 54 starting and ended at 59 so the fish should have been in their staging areas. I fished around Shellmound, Cave Lake and the big flat down by the dam. I started with jerk baits, swim baits, chatter baits, lipless cranks and nothing fishing from 15' to shallow. I then tried a c'rigged lizard and t'rigged and shakey finesse rigged worms. I managed a 15" fish on the t rigged 5" worm and a 14" fish on the shakey all on the first drop off the spawning flat. I didn't see a lot of fish on the graph anyplace and only baitfish in one area and nothing was around them. The fish I caught were really dark and pretty, not pale so that says they didn't just come up but where their buddies were I couldn't say. Water clarity was pretty good and there were a lot people on the lower Nick. Just a really pretty early spring day. I'm glad I got out and I'm sure better days are ahead. The ramp was blocked for a long time while some folks were getting a pontoon trailer unstuck that ran off the end of the ramp into a deep hole. I felt sorry for them as they were struggling but they had a lot of help and finally got it unstuck.
