I've got plans to go chukar hunting this weekend with my new shotgun that I got for christmas. I received a remington 870 express supermag 12 ga. and I was just wondering what choke I should use for the hunt. I am a new hunter, so any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance- :)

Depends on two things. How far are you going to be shooting and how good of a shot are you. If you are shooting a fairly far way stay with the full choke. A medium distance modified and close say with dogs use the improved. Now if you are a bad shot or shall we say not so good, just go with the improved and hope you hit a good spot on the long shots. emoBigsmile Jmax

ok, thx Jmax, the shotgun came with a modified choke, i was leaning on using it- you certainly answered my question- thanks a bunch!

as well as I know you it probably wouldn't matter which choke you used.....I don't think you could hit a bull in the butt at 30 yards......but, now that is just my opinion...FA

hahaha, well FA thx for ur vote of confidence! lol ill have u know that i went skeet shooting for the first time in my life a couple of weeks ago, and to my dad's amazement, and mine, i actually managed to hit a few! so put that in ur pipe and smoke it. :) let's just hope that i can shoot as well as i can umpire... that would be sufficient enough for me. lol

well weve arranged a guided hunt through some establishment in or around dunlap... old farmhouse hunting preserve i think is where were headed. should be a fun experience

stick to the modified or improved cylinder. I'd be worried you wont have any meat if you go with the full. Please leave a report on your bird outing! Also, include where you go and what we have to do to get on a hunt like that sounds like fun!

That is the info I was looking for. If you were going out west to hunt wild ranging birds, Full or Mod is in order. Hunting released birds with dogs is great fun, but your shots will be much closer, and improved is all you need. A mod or full will destroy too much of the bird (if you hit it). Good luck.

I use a guy onSand Mountain, Northeast AL Hunting Preserve. Jeff Ferguson, tell him Erik sent you. He does Quail, Chucker, and Pheasant hunts, with dogs & guides or Continental shoots for Pheasant's which is a great time with lots of shooting. http://www.northeastalhuntingpreserve.com/

I have the same gun. For the money, I don't think you can buy a better pump action 12 GA. Mine has been dropped in the sand and water and has never jammed. I use mine primarily for shooting clays and turkey. I use the modified choke that came with it to shoot clays and small bird. I have a 1" extended tube in a super full for turkey shooting. Enjoy your hunt and let us know how it goes.

I agree with Spur, I used to chase them around in the desert canyons out west and usually used full choke, sometimes mod early in the season. Here on private land with raised birds I'd go to improved, they should hold tight. I didn't know anyone had chukar around here - I used to religiously hunt pheasant, quail, hungarian partridge, and chukar in the NW and the chukar are by far my favorite to hunt and eat. Let us know how it goes and have fun!

Chukar are the best eating birds there are! I love marinating them with a little garlic and soy, then grill them to about medium...Mmmmmm emoHungry

Well thanks to all that have given advice on what is sure to be a fun and enjoyable time this saturday. I do have one more question however. I would like to get a couple more chokes- a full, and improved. Is there a particular brand that I need to look for? I've been shopping around but again, me being as new to the sport as I am, I am not sure if there is a better brand over another. Again thanks for all that have given their help! I will be sure to leave a report--- hopefully one that includes me hitting a bird or two. ;)
