Whileordering a new computer tower Monday morning I noticed the washing machine didn`t sound right. Apparently it isn`t draining the water before spinning in the wash and rinse cycles. Being as how it`s been leaking grease or oil for about 10 years I guess it`s time to bite the bullet and get a new one. This one is about 20 year old Hotpoint with matching dryer..... never had to do anything to either.

Now before you tell me about how great the new front loading high effeciency energy star lastest and greatest are superior to anything else......let me qualify my needs.

99 out out 100 loads run are made up of 2 pair of xl bib overalls and 2 t-shirts ,bloommers ands sox and welding hats and welding jacket every so often. Occasionally run a load of dress clothes...you know ...bluejeans and a decent shirt or two. I want to wash my quilts too so I need one probably 3.5 -4.5 cu ft.

I`ve done a lot of looking on the net today and less sure of what to get. I know if the clothes aren`t under completly under water they probably ain`t gonna get the crap out of them I get at work. So the Hi effeciency and front load energy stars aren`t going to work cause they don`t use enough water. SinceI only wash 3 loads max per week I`m not too concerned with water use and electricity.

I`m looking for any bad experiences with particular brands of top loaders you might have had. And the good ones you have had too.

thanks in advance.

Snuffy, I use a maytag extra capacity, gets even my grubbies (xl bibs) nice and clean. I got the stainless steel cylinder because the galouses will beat the enamel off the coated models.

Don't know if I can explain this right but I like the the washers that only rotate in one direction, not back and forth.

The flutes on the agitator are in a spiral pattern and the the agitator ratchets in one direction only. This seems to pull the load to the bottom more predictably.

I am a "Liberty" snob, been wearing them forever and this type of agitator seems to do better for me.

The spiral pattern on the agitator shaft is the key to recognizing these units.

Thanks CB......good thought on agitator.
Carl that used to drive my ex mother in law crazy ....luved that!!

We bought a LG Front-loader a little over a year ago and have not been real happy with it. Yes, it holds a lot of clothes and will even hold large comforters, but it is bad to cause a musty smell if you don't run the tub cleaning cycle fairly often. It doesn't do very well on really dirty clothes. We still have our old Kenmore and use it more than the new one.

I got a new clothes washing machine about 6 years ago, and boy has she really been a good one. She can sometimes be a little fickel to get to work right, but once you get her started she is good to go. The upkeep and maintainence has been a little higher than expected but not outrageous. I am not real sure if I would get the same model next time or not, this model seems to have grown a little since I got her. But all in all I am happy with her. emoBigsmile

We found that if we leave the washer door slightly ajar after running a load in the front loader it doesn't get the musty smell. We close it when we unload the dryer and that seems to be sufficient.

You can always blame it on BR.

After digging on the `net for a couple of days trying to find the right washer/dryer combo for the best stuff at the best price......I headed out today to put an eyeball on it before I bought it. Since the Home Depot in Lenoir City was the closest place to look ...I stopped. I walked in and the first thing I see is a Maytag combo.....normally priced at $976 on sale for $577. I knew from my research that this particular model was a pretty good set-up with SS tub, energy star and some other features. I needed to get a HDMI cable for my new `puter and the closest place for that was Best Buy in West Knoxville.....which just happened to be next door to Lowes. I memorized the model numbers and walked in to Lowes and told the clerk that Home Depot was beatin` the pants off them on those models. He checked their ad online and gave me the same price plus 10% more off . Wound up getting the combo for $520......$476 off the original price. I feel a little bit like a thief.........sometimes you just stumble on a good deal. I love price matching plus 10% !!
