Are there any carp/coarse fishers that can translate the pound rating on a carp rod in to something meaningful to a American? The numbers are always between 2 and 3 pounds. I can't look it up any where.

I'm not a carp fisherman, but I do have several friends who are dyed-in-the-wool CAG (Carp Anglers Group) members. See if this link will help you out somewhat.

Intro to 'Euro' Style Carp Tackle

If that doesn't help, try a Google search using these keywords: rod test curve. Perhaps, one of those resulting links will provide you with a better explanation.

Thanks. I guess you need the right search phrase.

In many ways "action" and "test curves" are so closely related that inevitably there is an overlap regarding blank design. To try and get to grips with the subject, it is important to understand the basic principal from which a general rule of thumb has been used by the industry for a long time.

The phrase "test curve" is a description that is used to calibrate how much weight is required to pull a given rod blank tip 90 degrees to the butt. The blank would be fixed horizontally and weights fixed to the tip until the 90 degrees are reached, Whatever total weight, in pounds and ounces, that is required to achieve this, is the "test curve".

This is a little odd because when searching for new rods, I would bend the tip to get an idea as to what force would be needed to get the bend of action I prefer. I would bend the rod until it was 90 degrees from the handle, if my arms would reach.

Sprestwood, If you ever fancy like using a couple of 12ft carp rods to feel their action (I use 3lb -3.5 lb test curves) gimme a shout .You would be more than welcome to try using some of my gear if your interested ;)
